This was a devastating earthquake and it actually moved cities ! Is it not amazing that earthuquakes can have such an effect on the cities and the people that live in them? If there were some more powerful earthquakes then we would have had a more bigger movement of cities

My question is with cities moving some inches, does it affect the city in any way? And would things inside the city change? Like the location of apartments or shops and would people notice that their locations have shifted?

The massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck the west coast of Chile last month moved the entire city of Concepcion at least 10 feet to the west, and shifted other parts of South America as far apart as the Falkland Islands and Fortaleza, Brazil.

These preliminary measurements, produced from data gathered by researchers from four universities and several agencies, including geophysicists on the ground in Chile, paint a much clearer picture of the power behind this temblor, believed to be the fifth-most-powerful since instruments have been available to measure seismic shifts.

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina and across the continent from the quake's epicenter, moved about 1 inch to the west. And Chile's capital, Santiago, moved about 11 inches to the west-southwest. The cities of Valparaiso and Mendoza, Argentina, northeast of Concepcion, also moved significantly.

Nice find.

I love when they show a picture like that and it's so small you can hardly see it.

It's known that some continents drift as much as 10 cm a year, give or take, but I guess all these quakes lately are just expediting the process.

Interesting find.

Is continental drift or movement attritubted to earthquakes enough to change location with regards to gps equipment? Just kinda curious.

The power of Mother Nature and out Planet never ceases to amaze, nice find!
