Is there a new Ocean or something?

On google maps there are the four normal oceans.

Indian Ocean
Atlantic Ocean
Pacific Ocean
Arctic Ocean

but wait, now there's one more! It's the Southern Ocean. Zoom in on Antarctica on google maps and check for yourself. It is south of the Pacific and Atlantic, almost like an opposite Arctic Ocean.

What's up with that?

When did that happen?

This isn't about the Timeline shift thingy... unless I'm the only one who things there use to be four oceans.

You forgot Billy Ocean

Seriously, I never heard of the "Southern Ocean". My guess is that it is an error on behalf of one of the many "geniuses" employed by Google.

EDIT: to add a wiki link on the topic of "southern ocean"

en.wikipedia.org...

I never thought I would reply to one of these threads but I am with you on this one.

Unless some paper pushers labeled it this way...I was taught in high school a mere 9 years ago that there were 4 oceans.

That said I am laying the blame of the guys who make the maps..at least until I know more
.

The Southern Ocean wasn't officially designated an Ocean until the year 2000... or so this web site says
Worlds 5 Oceans

I googled it... it is a new ocean, but it was never on the news. Usually something like that would make the news fairly quickly.

I am trying SO HARD not to say: OMG!!! When did Antarctica separate from Australia!?!" But instead, I'll simply say: "Well spotted." It is actually possible that there has been an official revision of nomenclature by the governing international body. You know, the folks that waffle over Persian/Arabian Gulf. I'll look into this one after "Star Trek" and post the results at my leisure.

Two things different from school days. Pluto isn't a planet, and there are five oceans. Maybe there will be a new continent?

Aug 20 2009 In 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization created the fifth and newest world ocean - the Southern Ocean - from the southern portions of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean. The new Southern Ocean completely surrounds Antarctica.

Not to b picky but the correct word is SINCE... not SENSE

SENSE of touch... humor

to have the sense of mind to call 911

SINCE a conjunction

Larry's not coming since his back hurts.

because... for the reason that... seeing that/as

btw definitions are from iMac dictionary

It is being picky BUT if you want to be taken serious little grasshopper your
post titles should be grammatically correct.

52 states! Why not? We could split CA in half - maybe it will do it itself (hope not!)
Or we could annex a couple of small countries. Haiti might like to be a state... Or maybe you are counting Guam and Puerto Rico. How many folks read your post and didn't even get it?
Your right, it's sad out there.

The ignorance in this thread is astounding.

It seems that unless something is right under your nose, it doesn't exist.

It's been called the Southern Ocean for a long time, officially or not.

I would hate to have to list the things that are different now than when I was in school.

I feel old enough as it is.

Seems to me that this is just a labeling issue.

It really is labeling... on some maps the Atlantic Ocean is broken into North and South Atlantic and the Pacific is also broken into North and South Pacific... making it look like there are 7 oceans.

I just spent an afternoon helping my niece break all this down for a grade school Geography lesson and it has become more complicated to learn. I remember learning the "main" Seas and the Oceans... she has to learn all that I listed! Yikes.

Reminds me of when I was in grade school and we were all assigned a Continent in which we had to learn every Country/Capital within that Continent. I got Africa. Awesome. Everything has changed since I memorized that!

Many, many moons ago---when I was in grammar school--there were 5 oceans, and I seem to remember it was called the Antarctic Ocean.

When did they stop saying it was an ocean and there were only four

It's all just redefining Geography. First it was just "the waters surrounding Antarctica" but not an official ocean, and people unofficially called it the Antarctic Ocean. After lengthy debate, it than became the Southern Ocean...

Antarctica Ocean

New Fifth Ocean

For some time, those in geographic circles have debated whether there are four or five oceans on earth.

Some consider the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific to be the world's four oceans. Now, those that side with the number five can add the fifth new ocean and call it the Southern Ocean or the Antarctic Ocean, thanks to the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). The IHO has attempted to settle that debate through a year 2000 publication by declaring, naming, and demarcating the Southern Ocean.
