Chile Earthquake May Have Shortened Days on Earth

news.yahoo.com

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's axis," NASA officials said in a Monday update.

I didn't see this posted anywhere else and was surprised. I think this is pretty significant. I always thought the days were getting shorter now I we know its really happening. All those seconds add up you know.
I am sure this will bring up a lot of question. I wonder how over time it will affect out circadian rhythms over time if the days continue to get shorter. How will this affect climate change?

I don't think any particular individual is going to have to worry about their circadian rhythms, not at 1.26 milliseconds per day (incidentally, that works out to a little over half a minute in the course of an 80 year lifespan). Now, if 8.8 quakes were a much more frequent occurance, then we could have something to worry about (for a lot of reasons).

It's pretty cool, seeing the power of nature. The same thing happened with the Sumatra quake. But realistically, it's so minute you won't see any difference.

Sorry to rain on your parade. I started one day before yesterday, a bit of a different title, but a lot of the same info.

LOL, it's at most 1.6 microseconds. The quake that produced the Indonesian Tsunami shortened our days by about 6 microseconds. Out of all of the earthquakes in the past 100 years they wouldn't have shortened days enough for anyone to notice.

It's been happening for billions of years. If China fills their resivoir to capacity it'll shift it .6 microseconds the other way. It's not a big deal at all.
