Worldwide PSN meltdown; older PS3 consoles paralyzed, Sony working on fix

news.cnet.com

t seems that a major worldwide firmware bug has affected most PlayStation 3s, preventing the consoles from connecting to the PlayStation Network and in many cases (including our own) not allowing for offline game play. The problem, whatever it is, comprises all PS3 consoles aside from the newer PS3 Slim.

whats funny is sony has a timer installed on all there device's and this proof's it to disable older models to force user's to buy newer unit's.
www.removethelabels.com...
Speculation about the existence of this so-called “Sony timer” emerged in the 1980s and 1990s as consumers grew increasingly suspicious of Sony devices that stopped working just after the warranty expired. According to the theory, Sony’s time-activated kill switches are designed to boost sales by driving consumers to purchase replacement parts, repairs, or new models (often the cheapest option) after a scheduled period.

Today, decades after the rumors began, people still talk about the Sony timer. In 2006, after a string of laptop explosions prompted a global recall of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Sony Energy Devices Corporation, Japanese Internet forums were flooded with sarcastic comments raving about how effective the latest generation of Sony timers had become.

Clearly, much of the speculation about hidden Sony timers is tongue-in-cheek, but some people appear to take the claims seriously, pointing to the suspiciously precise timing of product failures as evidence of foul play. Regardless of whether or not Sony timers actually exist, the company has been dogged by the perception that its products break down just outside warranty.

this is why i migrated from the PS2 to XBOX 360 when the new generation came out.

i am much happier with my xbox than sony ever made me (the PS2 was a POS, and i was always taking it apart to repair it).

i will happily keep paying my 50 bucks a year for XBoxLive, even with its lagging issues.

There is no predetermined redundancy, or timer or whatever you want to call it this week, it's as mythical as the mysterious non-existant Microsoft backdoor. What this is, in absolute reality, is a perfect example of DRM at its finest. Not hobgoblins or magical elfs shutting down your electricals, just one bunch of idiots protecting another bunch of idiots intellectual property. At least that was the plan.

To think this is to do with them trying to con people to get the newer model is just plain silly. There's so many playstation owners fuming about this all over the internet. And also if they can't get this fixed then they will have to do a recall which will cost the a tonne of money. If people will have to get the newer system to play their games it will be at sony's expense.
btw It's also affected my ps3 but I'm not bothered I have a 360 anyway.

Just a week before the FFXIII release as well?

Man people are going to be mad if they can't play that game come the 10th. I'm so happy we have the Xbox so we can play it when it comes out.

Poor Sony, maybe they got hacked?

It's Y2K for PS3's apparently...

What I find most fustrating is the people who continue to exclaim how PSN is a free service and we shouldn't be complaining because it doesn't cost us.
People do realise that some PS3s that weren't even connected to the internet are no longer able to play their games too, right? I paid $700AU for my console when it came out and for this to happen and to have had hardly any word from Sony about the issue isn't right at all, regardless of whether or not it costs to use their network service.

If you buy a new car and a factory fault takes it off the road, the manufacturer will recall it instantly especially if it's happened to pretty much ALL of its buyers.

ApocalyPS3: Buggy Clock Drives PlayStation 3 Haywire

“If you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data,” said Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold in a statement e-mailed to media and posted on the company’s blog. “We have not found a solution just yet,” Seybold told Wired.com by phone Monday afternoon. “A lot of engineers are working on the problem,” but Sony does not know when the glitch will be fixed, or if it will fix itself at 4 p.m. PST Monday, when the consoles’ internal clocks advance to the first day of March in Greenwich Mean Time. looks crooked to me..
millions of dollars for unit's all broke now.
now they will be forced to buy a slim or get a xbox...
it's like a car that quit's the day after warranty...cause they have a kill switch lol

new slim's came out ..the bug only effect those who do not own a slim..all others user's ps3 may be rendered useless...
aint right in any book.

My PS2 has been working since I got it, ages and ages ago. If there is a timer, it's internet based.

Well it would make sense to distribute the code for the "kill switch" over the internet as doing this would make it virtually impossible to detect until the console died, you could even make it delete itself afterwards if you were that way inclined.

Personally I don't subscribe to that theory, rather that some bods at Sony have made a monumental error in an unannounced update and it's been sent out without proper testing. I expect it could be fixed with a software rollback of sorts, I'm not sure how much data would be lost by this however.

So glad I'm an Xbox owner after hearing this!

Well the issue only affects online play and newer games with trophy support. My backwards compatible games Ps1 and 2 work perfectly fine. As does my blu-ray. Honestly the only reason I bought this thing was for the up-scaling of my Ps2 games and the blu-ray support. Haven't touched an actual Ps3 game since I bought the thing 2 years ago. But that has to do with my aversion to paying 60 dollars for a game, i'd much rather shell out 15 bucks for something used and feel like I got my money's worth.

I've got a 5 year old Sony VAIO and an even older Sony Trinitron TV, both still work brilliantly. Got an old ass Clie PDA, that still works. Bought Bravia LCD a couple of years ago, still not timed out. My kid had a Sony MP3 player (well ATRAC actually but thats marketing for you eh), which died, but it died because she jumped in a canal with it and it didn't agree with the water. She has a Sony Mini system, works fine. I had a Sony DVD player just die once. OMG must have been the timer (or maybe it was just a piece of crap).

you wouldn't want that. i play only FPS. Right now, it is Modern Warfare 2.

If i were to play outside, it could cause serious casualties.

This is why you NEVER buy Sony! Cheap Chinese garbage products. Since it's launch xbox live has xploded and never had any problems. Say what you will about xbox but there is no timer forcing you to get a new one. Thank god I bought an xbox.
