The general standard of healthcare in the Falkland Islands is good. Treatment is free to UK Citizens but you will have to demonstrate proof of residence in the UK

I think Chavez is just jealous that we had the biggest empire the world has ever / will ever see.

Falkland citizens want to remain British and that is the main thing.

End of.

In the 1982 War Argentina was very lucky that the UK used great restraint.

As I recall they used an SAS strike force to attack an airfield on the Argetinian mainland instead of pasting it with bombers. The UK concentrated it's attacks on the Islands themselves, which put their own citizens at more risk than Argentinian civilians. After the HMS Conqueror sank the General Belgrando the Argintinian Navy pretty much packed it in and stayed home.

Chavez needs to keep his mouth shut and mind his own business. He's in for problems of his own. I wouldn't be too suprised to see him get the Mussolini treatment sometime in the near future, from his own people.

As long as the people of the Falklands want to stay as members of the UK, they should be able to. If South America is such a Democracy, why would this be an issue?

I guess Chavez forgot about the US amphibious assault ships and the carrier Carl Vinson not too far from his coastline.

There are two more carriers in the Western Atlantic.

Unlike Chavez we are not paper tigers and if given the excuse we will take action.

This is gonna look like an anti-UK rant but eh.

Chavez is right. Empires are over. The UK should be no difference. Also IMO the monarchy should all be hanged or at the very least kicked out of their palace, and stripped of everything they own that belongs to the people.

Also, the UK cannot afford another war. It is on the verge of bankruptcy. The british people should go to war with their own government instead of going to war with Argentinians, which by the way, were destroyed economically by the big banks, most of them originating in the UK.

The UK should stay on it's freaking island and shut the hell up, you screwed the world enough. Continue being slaves, while drinking beer all day long and getting your panties in a bunch over a freaking sport match while your country crumbles under the tyranny, you seem to like it.

BTW, that was a rant against the UK monarchy, which i hate with all my being, the Uk government, which is corrupt as hell, the banks, which are screwing everyone in the world and the lazy dumb english people.

It seems like all the good people of england have left this hellhole and I don't blame you for it, I would have done the same.

There would probably be more bombs aimed at Chavez than Argentina.

Yep, US is just waiting for an excuse. However, I think Chavez is all bark.

Once it starts, Argentina would be on its own.

I hardly see how it's your concern. The Commonwealth can deal with this issue itself.

I wasn't able to find what international laws were but I believe that 200 miles is the limit. The Falklands are 300 miles off the coast. If 200 miles is the limit Argentina doesn't even have any LEGAL claim to the islands.

Yeah, I think we would leave Argentina for the UK to handle.

Venezuela and the others would cease to have air forces and navies. They would be at the negotiating tables within 48 hours, since thats about how long it would take to wipe out every air force and navy in their "coalition of the foolish".

Seriously who in their right mind challenges NATO?

I'm curious. Being Australian I have no idea. But do the Falkland Island guys get commonwealth style healthcare?

Full NHS mate. They have quite a modern hospital I believe. I nearly applied for a post there.

Incidently, if the newspapers are to be believed, a squadron of the new Typhoons are in transit to the Falklands - they would really screw with any Argie Mirages that show their face.

Its our concern for a number of reasons.

One: The UK is in NATO

Two: Latin America is our "backyard".

Three: We would like an excuse to slap some sense into Chavez.

Four: We like to blow stuff up.

To be honest, its not a NATO issue, it was'nt last time and I do not think the US would get involved either ....... not directly anyway.

Unfortunately, this (depending on timing and consequences) could be to Gordon Brown's benefit ....... remember how Margaret Thatcher rode the Falklands wave.

We won't get involved as long as Chavez and pals stay out of it.

They get involved, we get involved. Its very simple.

It looks like it is just Chavez trying to divert attention from the problems he is having providing water and power...
www.guardian.co.uk...

"One of the severest droughts in decades has given Venezuela's socialist president a political nightmare as hydro-electrical power dribbles to a standstill, unleashing blackouts, rationing and protests. The waters behind the Guri dam, which supplies more than half the nation's power, have touched perilously low levels. Chávez has declared an "electricity emergency""

yeah, i know of nato and article v, but where were they in 82?

Indirect help is just as important as direct help.

Harold Brooks-Baker, publishing director of Burke's Peerage, said Monday that Mr. Reagan was offered a knighthood ''because of his special contribution to the British Government under Mrs. Thatcher.'' ''He helped Mrs. Thatcher in the Falklands War and in many different ways,'' he said.

Washington provided naval intelligence, communications installations and political support to Britain in its 1982 war with Argentina over the Falkland Islands in the south Atlantic.

I don't mean to be an ass man but I think the UK is perfectly competent to handle her own affairs. That said there are many nations that are loyal to the old empire that would pitch in. Take a look at #4:

www.globalfirepower.com...

Hell, even Canada has a better military than Argentina.

I knew that this one was comming. Chavez, if foolish enough to actually help Argentina, will bring the USA into direct conflict with it.

Columbia that will be a great staging point to go in and attack Venezuela.
lol. you'd have young guys begging to join the military so they'd get a chance at being sent to Columbia.... the women are hot!

But seriously, I bet people in power must be salivating at the chance to go in and give chavez a big steaming cup of STFU in person.

How many miles are they off the British Coast? Kind of strange laying claim to Islands so far away in 2010. How many people even live there anyway?

It doesn't matter, they are NOT in Argentinian waters. Thus NOT open to a legal claim by Argentina.

About 3200 people live on the Falklands.
