The original "Starship Enterprise", from the iconic TV series 'Star Trek', as imagined in the 1960s (well, premiered, on NBC, September 1968...)
has been 'nailed down' as 1,017 feet in length.
Compare to the "NCC-1701D" Enterprise, from the "Next Generation" which is roughly TWICE the size, in length, but has more than FOUR times the
volume, in habitable area......
Yeah, all SF, they are.....but, considering the OP, and sizes....WE HUMANS are still going to be about the same size, regardless HOW we explore
outside, and off-planet Earth....SO we will need machines that can accomodate us in that endeavour.
SIZE DOES MATTER!!! (And Matter matters, in terms of 'size'....so far as we know today...)
