So we don't need "socialism" per se but why not introduce some happy medium: a socially conscious government that attempts to meet some modest minimum standards in basic food, housing, health and education needs of the people, one that maintains freedom of speech, protects individual rights, encourages vigorous debate and has a healthy dose of competitive capitalism thrown in?

Oh yeah !
This says exactly what I meant. Thank you !

Going to check the site Now.

The world hunger problem: Facts, figures and statistics

Every year 15 million children die of hunger.

For the price of one missile, a school full of hungry children could eat lunch every day for 5 years.

The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the world is well-fed, one-third is under-fed one-third is starving- Since you've entered this site at least 200 people have died of starvation. Over 4 million will die this year.

One in twelve people worldwide is malnourished, including 160 million children under the age of 5. United Nations Food and Agriculture.

3 billion people in the world today struggle to survive on US$2/day.

One out of every eight children under the age of twelve in the U.S. goes to bed hungry every night.

The assets of the world's three richest men are more than the combined GNP of all the least developed countries on the planet.

It is estimated that some 800 million people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition, about 100 times as many as those who actually die from it each year.

When will people realize that the USA is the primary supplier of food to the entire world, that the USA gives away millions of tons of food (and billions of dollars) to "hungry nations" every year, and that the real thieves in the world are the corrupt governments of the "hungry nations" — thieves who accept and hoard the USA's charitable gifts for themselves, or turn around and sell the food at a profit.

In other words, the leaders of these nations who engage in free market trade? Maximum profit at minimum loss, booyah!

Well well...

Yesterday there were almost, (just like that ) more people that might go hungry in the US then in Africa.

That's why I thought it was a good idea to bump this thread.
It's been a while so I guess a lot of people haven't even seen it yet.
