You are now trying to diminish the character of people seeing a libery issue impacted with "well, if you dont heart governmental censorship, then your a secret child molester". shame on you.

Read, digest, and understand before you jump to rash conclusions, missing the point entirely.

[edit on 18-2-2010 by secretbear]

I think everybody on ATS would disagree with you secretbear. The Australian government won't stop at limiting the actual sites that should be censored no more than the US government will limit the definition of terrorists to those that are actually terrorists.

Just because a person is opposed to losing their civil liberties it doesn't give you the right to suggest that they have something to hide, as you've done, smiley faced or not.

[edit on 18-2-2010 by rexusdiablos]

So you're saying that if a person wants to look at child pornography, he has a right to and you have no problem with that? What planet do YOU live on? Why does the Internet have to be completely uncensored?

100% agree. I cannot believe the female rights groups have not had a field day with this. They are effectively placing a legal size limit on women.

I believe there is a very high probability that ATS will appear on the block-list...

...did a quick search of ATS and there were 411 hits on "euthanasia".

I am incredibly concerned with this as well. If Stephen Conroy has already asked Google to filter videos from Youtube concerning 'euthanasia', then i am afraid ATS will indeed be black listed.

Yes I did confuzz you with Silver Shadow. Sorry!

The funny thing about censorship is who and how do you determine the content that gets censored?

Just like anything if you cross one line it becomes very easy to keep crossing more and more line's don't you see. And many bad things have happened because of good intentions. Man is fallible and if the government gets to much power they will always seek more. We should learn from history instead of always looking forward.

I love the people of Australia I believe they and the people of the US are kindred spirits we both are outcasts of the same mother. And because of that we have learned many things including to be strong and if you have to fight you better win and that freedom is something they can not give or take because it comes from inside of us. Long live Australia and her great people. And I would love to one day visit and stay awhile. I think I would feel very at home down under.

Hello Everybody,

Ok,I have spent the last five hours trying to get into ATS to no avail
-Server has timed out-,For a while i thought that maybe it was a server issue
that would be sorted out in a while but no,
So i decided to download the Tor bundle,it places an on/off button for the proxy
in the corner of my browser, anyway,I switch it on and reload the ATS page and bingo,I am on,It's a little slow and i had to log in again but it is there, makes me wonder what is going on,is ATS being blocked?,I will keep playing with the on/off button and see if this post i am writing is a load of paranoid drivel or a testament to the ummm, people that make the rules,i will post more when i have some more to tell.

Violet.

Edit,Ok,Gahh,I tried on my wife's Magic toaster and it is the same,
I am gonna go looking for the other blokes (Chadwickus,Oz,Zazz and Chop)on here and see if they are around

Well, as a father I happen to agree with what Australia are doing. They are filtering out the extreme stuff which is an affront to civilized people. You may think beastaility is fun, but I don't and I certainly don't want my children to accidently (or through curiousity) have access to it, nor sexual vioence, nore child abuse...

You need to stop looking to others to fix your problems and start taking responsibility as a parent. It's YOUR job to raise your kids. If your worried about your kids viewing stuff they shouldn't, then install filter software on your computer. Most modern routers worth their salt also have built in filters.. use them. If your still worried, cancel your internet. Might want to cancel your TV too.. never know what they might accidently see or hear.

Maybe instead of looking at the government to fix your problems, you should take responsibilty for your children.

And before you ask, yes I do have a child, a 5 year old boy.

Every Windows computer has a built in Internet Content Advisor. Set it up and go through the time it takes to train the system. All you do each time is allow and remember, or not. Too easy for the conscientious parent to do.

I do agree that bestiality, child pornography and much of the violence and gore should be censored. It's available for kids when the parents aren't watching, so it must stop.

My concern is those few people who make the decision will over time add more sites including sites for truth, and therefore anything seen as seditious.

Australia has been used for many tests over the years, from irradiating the countryside to the Irish Model GST that was also used in New Zealand beforehand, from the contract employment system that took worker's long term rights away, to the Gun Buy Back Scheme. All tested well in the land of the Aussies.

are we 100% sure this will go ahead? because I'm australian & having been following the story & have seen the filters obvious faults discussed on mainstream TV & ultimately concluded as a waste of money, a list containing websites we should not be blocked from, and easy to bypass. Also I've seen only one politician mention it since it got shot down the first time and he was trying to revive it....thats the last I heard about it.

SO,

I am not trying to shoot down your warning, I instead seek clarity, some sort of unequivocal proof that they are intending to go ahead with this at this time.

Kind Regards,
-B.M

P.S) what is kicking up a fuss going to do if everyone knows about it already? theres has to be steps beyond 'awareness' if any of us hope to make ground with ANY of the problems we face.

G'day B.Morrison

That's exactly what I also experienced from here in Oz.

I also wondered if it might have been the ATS "reno's".

I have posted regarding this in the ATS issues thread.

Kind regards

There won't be a public outcry because we will be lead to believe that it is being done for the "greater good" and it will be done incrementally.

Sites such as A.T.S. will simply be collateral damage.

You must be joking surely.

Any attempt to ban popular forums or chat groups will cause a fire storm of public outrage. Politicians will be hung from lamp posts.

Banning the worst child porn sites, or terrorist sites that incite fanatics, tell how to make homemade weapons or explosives are a very different thing.

How many thousands of times have I read this before on ATS? At least 1,000 I'm sure. Every time the government/corporations/elite/TPTB do exactly as they were going to do, and this armchair militia sits around saying the next time the government tries anything, they're going to get it.

This makes me laugh every time I see it.

Uh huh. Bluff and bluster. Denial and delay.

And ever so slowly, the cute little noisy frogs come to a boil and don't even realize they died while they looked the other way.

Hullo?

The time for public outrage is NOW. Before your favorite forums and chat groups are filtered out of existence.

After they're gone, there won't be any place where you can voice your "outrage."

Duh.

...Hope everyone in Aussieland can still get here... Let us know, 'kay?

I've lived in Australia for all my life. For me... there is no place like home, I love this country. Oz has recently(over the last 10 years) been changing in political/social structure, not for the better but for the worse.

news.ninemsn.com.au...

If this filter is ever actually implemented[not only as a trial], I see it very unlikely that Australians will not cause a fuss, if not revolt! Personal freedom of information in your own home should never be supressed. Australians who don't know, or havent payed attention to what the filter will be, will scream travesty! when they cannot access content they have been accessing since the days of 56k modems. Im sure the child porn stuff will get alot of people on board to accept it... but once people notice other sites/forums/content starting to be hidden from us... there will be unrest and even disorder! One thing Australians are good at is FIGHTING for our right!

More(apparent) problems in OZ at the moment:

ALCOHOL: Massive problem at the moment apparently? For the "safety" of people in built up urban environments where pubs/clubs serve alcohol late into the night apparently causing "drunken antisocial violence" [In Oz there's usually a pub within walking distance... Yes we do love our beer: that said I still go out clubbing in the city nearly every weekend and havent noticed a spike in violence at all. It's the usual drunk morons who fall flat on their faces anyway and maybe an idiot here or there wanting a fight. Nothing that wasn't already part of the "going out" scene.]
SOLUTION: More police pressence on the streets[I mean all over the place], 360 deg surveillance vans[3] and a myriad of surveillance cams in strategic areas around "trouble spots" in the city and for some reason on main Hwys that link to the city.
OUTCOME: No level of success in detering violence or anything else for that matter

GLOBAL WARMING: Seems that global warming will become the new word for "terrorist" with the main REGIME being our Sun, causing the wolrd as we know it to implode due to our rubbishing of the environment over 1000s of years of pollution and creating carbon.
SOLUTION: Tax the citizens of the country (for creating the problem ofcourse) calling it a Carbon Tax. Tax major companies(which pollute indescriminately) a tiny amount as... they control the Gov.
OUTCOME: Tax payers will be slugged with a new tax making day to day life even harder then it already is, even though the GEC hasn't hit oz as hard as euro/western countries. [I'm sure once this has been thought about more... they will be adding extra taxes in the name of "saving the planet". Don't know much about chemtrails but have been seeing alot more lately over the past 3 years.

Thank you for allowing me to rant of the downward spilral we are heading on for my first post to ATS.

Blocking doesn't work. China has tried it.

Any techno Internet user in china can find a way around it and then they just leak what they find into Chinese blogs or other internal sites so that others can view it.

I have a program called a IP address hunter that goes though IP addresses by number looking for good ones.
e.g., 208.77.188.166, 208.77.188.167 ECT ECT and looking for IP addresses that connect to somewhere.
I have found a number of connections to unlisted IP addresses.
A couple of them have been child porn sites that i have reported.

If you look for child porn by searching for a URL like childporn.net you will not find any.
But if you are a pedophile you may have hidden site known to the pedophile community that will give you a number of IP addresses by number IE 205.68.477.78.
These sites maybe in china or russia ECT and the name may be eajdthsir.ru/cn
The URL has no meaning and no one but pedophiles would know to look for it by search engine and they would have found on some meaningless site the IP address for eajdthsir.ru/cn

This would keep anti child porn groups like "Anti-Child Porn.org".from using search engines to search for these child porn sites.

If one pedophile wanted to send another a massage about a new child porn site he could send a Innocent email like

Check out this site basic-woodworking.net
and at the bottom of the message put 205a68b477c78

The other pedophile would know that by replacing the letters with periods would turn 205a68b477c78 into a IP address of 205.68.477.78 the ip address of the child porn.

This way no filtering system for child porn can ever work to stop child porn.
Then you add in the fact that The total number of languages in the world is between 5,000 and 10,000, and many have translation sites on the web so That a pedophile or other people can translate messages onto other languages to make it harder for censers to apply filters or for Anti-Child Porn groups to read sites to find child porn
Or any other subject a government wants to block.

I have been looking at this system to comucate with friends without anyone being able to hack or intercept messages.
all it would take is a foreign IP address and a obscure language and a encryption system.

I could send messages to anyplace in the world with Internet connection and hide a hidden message in a Innocent looking post on a public site.
and a friend with the knowledge of where to look and how to decrypt it would be able to retrieve the message without anyone/government knowing a message was even being sent or who received it.

That was no rant, you are on the money mate!

Alcohol and violence has ALWAYS been a problem here.

In my early 20's I used to supplement my income with a second job: working in the clubs of Brisbane and Ipswich. Tragic I know.

Every night there was several fights and guys so drunk they just wouldn't leave unless they were dragged out. Dragging drunks and fighters out of pubs and clubs became very very tiresome and I just got sick of it.

Interestingly, I worked a rave in the Valley and there were no fights and I didn't have to touch ANYBODY. I was chuffed for days!

There is a big problem here but more police and C.C.T.V. isn't going to fix it.

Like any true action figure: sells on how "awesome" it is but doesn't actually do anything. Is much more plastic looking than you expected too but maybe because it's manufactured by China.

I'm a tradesman and my wage DOUBLED in 7 - 8 years under Johnny.

Hold on, doesn't Liberal cripple the working class?
