Whatever makes you think that alien contact hasn't already happened? If it happened to me i would take picture of me with an alien and use it as my avatar. Wait a minute! It did happen and i am using a real alien on my avatar. The reality is no one will believe you. that is what really happens.

Lets assume that Aliens come in a physical form and have physcial mass.
To traverse the distances required means that they either have access to free, unlimited energy (in which case they would appear Godly to us so we dont have to worry as they could do as they please) or alternatively, would be looking for a way to pay for the resources used to facilitate the journey when they got here!!!!!

The latter concerns me as I think any exploration could only be funded under the auspices of some sort of Alien millitary/financial project which wouldnt bode well for the people of Earth.

This idealistic noton of Aliens "coming in peace" is highly unlikely in my opinion as any civilisation that has a history of exploration, unfortunatley also has a history of conquest.

On a related note: The Earth (and our solar system as a whole) is a bit on the small side in terms of other stars/planets in the Universe so I also think we could be faced by soemthing that might be 100-200 tiimes larger than Humans which would be interesting as they might just refuse to recognise us as equals ( much as we would with Ants...)

Very good post. Now, missing people, that in and of itself is a conspiracy. We simply no where on the planet keep a good log of who has "gone missing" totally disappeared never to be seen or heard from again.

because the truth of the visitations are dangerous to us. A real and present danger could explain why in the age of supercomputers, complex databases and highly accurate GPS, that there are no consistent and in-depth missing person’s databases outside the United States that I am aware of (mmmm).

Danger of first contact as far as we are concerned?

I imagine that any visiting race would also ask themselves the same question. Indulge me a little here…

Bonobo chimps; they are, according to some primatologists, capable of compassion, altruism, empathy, patience, kindness, and sensitivity. They are capable of self recognition, communicate through facial expression, vocalization and recognizable hand gestures. They can laugh, and are more than capable of learning to recognize many hundreds of spoken words and commands. Their society is highly organized and successful.

They are incredibly closely related to Humans.

However, they are also massively aggressive territorially, theoretically practice social reasoning we have yet to understand and are, at the end of the day, wild animals.

They are therefore, unless you are extremely well versed in their behaviour, incredibly dangerous. On interacting with them on a one-to-one basis, it really doesn’t matter that you in comparison belong to an extraordinarily advanced species. They are seriously unpredictable.

Now apply the same description to us from an aliens point of view.

Yes, we may have a form of civilization and all the positive accompaniments that it entails – technology, science and philosophical reasoning – but we have also maintained almost all of the trappings of our animal ancestors. And let’s not forget how we’ve spiced things up; a belief in invisible gods which are, for some, worth killing and dying for, and the perfection of greed and lust into driving forces for more aggression.

Oh, and the most important thing for any visiting alien; despite us developing our civilizations over many thousands of years, we still persist in staying in tribal groups that persevere with the distrust of other tribal groups. In other words, we are disjointed and have no common goal or point of reference.

What a nightmare to deal with, no?

Don’t get me wrong; I love this world, but unless our alien visitors are near “god-like” in their technology and can guarantee their own safety, then I fear for their wellbeing when they land.
