The Nazi Bell - Doomsday Weapon

Indiana JOnes the scene when they open the ark, probably is a metaphor for when nazis experimented with the BEll and then released what they percieved as radiation (or maybe spirits) which in turn killed mnay scientists nearby.

Also the bell may have been used to play with resonance in order to create special craft engines
