As part of its budget for the next year, Darpa is investing $6 million into a project called BioDesign, with the goal of eliminating “the randomness of natural evolutionary advancement.” The plan would assemble the latest bio-tech knowledge to come up with living, breathing creatures that are genetically engineered to “produce the intended biological effect.” Darpa wants the organisms to be fortified with molecules that bolster cell resistance to death, so that the lab-monsters can “ultimately be programmed to live indefinitely.”

just wanted to give this thread a bump,
I find this a little scary along the lines with modified foods,some things should be left alone!

Reading of this earlier I was simply horrified. But truth be told I had expected the hidden military/industrial/pharmacological complex in the USA to have done far worse. The problem with these synthetic beings -- not unlike the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow -- the problem is what will be done when they come to the Man Behind the Curtain and want to have a soul or they come with a familiar complaint via Disney, they come wanting to be real.

And what if they come with these demands whilst holding sophisticated weaponry of some sort...
