Right i'm relatively new here & so far finding it very informing & useful, however there is something thats been bugging me since i first started reading threads here.

Ok, you suvived! Whats next!!?

Somehow you have survived everything they said would happen & here you are very much alive & well, whats your next step!??

Find other survivors & try to rebuild humanity in some way or keep clear of anyone just in case?

Say you did find others, how would you make contact & for what reasons would you be making contact?

& there's that other thing that slowly grinds into you.....the urge to mate!
How would you deal with this if your solo? Could you deal with it?? (i seriouslly don't want it in graphic detail PLEASE!!!)

& further along that line....keeping the species going....the phrase i would use is slim pickings!!!.....could you just do it for your species or would you need more!???

Well that just about covers it...please once again nothing to graphic regarding your urges lol

first off... you breach a very good point... Now after you have crawled out from under the rubble or whatever, there is a normal part of all humans that needs companionship... okay making whoopee is later on but it would eventually happen.... on to other things:

You are going to always need food, shelter, water and weapons... If you actually know what to look for there is an abundance of each of those around...

safety is always (would be) going to be an issue that demands the utmost in attention from you...

when you do meet up with other people..remember that the dregs of society have survived as well... choosing the right people to be around or to have in your newly founded group is going to be left up to you... what are you going to be striving for? A sense of normalacy? perhaps, but it is going to take work and hard effort to bring anything back to a sense of "what once was".

It will not be a simple thing of waiting on the government to come and take care of you..you and your happy new found friends are all on your own... you will have to kill or die where you are.

setting up a safe community means that whatever comes your way, ...if hostile...it dies on the spot, ask questions later. All of the so called compassion people have will be basically by the way side, and it will literally be survival of the fittest..

never consider it an easy chore and do not think that just because you and your band of followers have staked out a piece of ground that it is always going to be safe...it won't!!!
While you are rebuilding, the criminal element and the scum of the earth will be growing out side of your area, and like it or not you will either fight them off or die where you are...

nuff said.... think hard and start prepping for a bumpy ride because i believe it is not to far off..

I'm very useful for reproduction despite the current backchat directed at me

Really, it;s the only real use for me so where do I sign up?
Gotta keep the old species movin' eh?

Could you imagine if say 90% of the popluation died wihtin 2 years?
where do you even start?
In a way it would possibly be an organic event, I mean people coming together of free will and like minds to accomplish certain goals, small scale organizing and localization of everything possible from food, water, medical needs, small trade industry of some sort. mutual protection.
On the other hand it could be the wild west.
Somehow I think it will be a combination of both.
Knowing the difference is going to be the tricky bit.

Well... first things first, leave the mating to the others would be my prerogative. I have never had desires or will for procreation, call me weird, but that is just how I am.

Instead, my focus will be on preserving what humanity there is left, starting with my family and known locals. My town has a population of 6-10k people and for the most part I know the populace. I would prepare them already, however, it is a sad truth that the people I have met in my area are so close minded they would need a nuke to land in their back yard for their "situation" to change.

So sadly, my first focus, will be rounding up the people I know who will be beneficial to building society and help form a lasting society. I wouldn't be too picky, as long as you are willing to pull your weight, keep complaining to a minimum, and don't think yourself above anyone else, then you are alright with me.

Mating at this point would be be something I would forbid. Not only would reproducing in a small, depleted society put one helpful individual out of action for 9+ months, but it would add another mouth to feed and take care of, and at such a young age in such conditions, that is no simple task. If the people are too animalistic to forgo their usual mating rituals then they can accomplish that on their own time in their own group.

Once a group is arranged and people are assigned tasks, security becomes the mail detail. There is no off time for security, there is no lax in the guard patrol, security is the MOST important aspect of maintaining the civility of the group. Every single person must be armed, and nobody ever leaves our borders by themselves or they do it at their own risk.

Everyone who isn't securing our defined "area", will be left to work on establishing a compound consisting of however many buildings it takes. There is so much to think about and establish, however, it would be mostly more of the same as the survival techniques that have been discussed on here countless times.

Depends how you describe survived.

The day after, the week after,a year?

It is like the Haiti earthquake.A lot died from it but thousands more will die from it and its after effects.

How long will they count the victims?

Read this book if just for the entertainment value.
Earth Abides

It is still in print and you should be able to pick it up as a paperback.

Earth Abides, a 1949 post-apocalyptic science fiction novel by Berkeley English professor George R. Stewart, tells the story of the fall of civilization from deadly disease and its rebirth. Beginning in the United States in the 1940s, it deals with Isherwood (Ish) Williams, Emma, and the community they founded. The survivors live off the remains of the old world, while learning to adapt to the new. Along the way they are forced to make tough decisions and choose what kind of civilization they will rebuild.

Every scenario will be different and there will be hundreds of them. Basically you will die if youre not prepared, and you will struggle to survive even if you are prepared. I dont see many making it through the first month.

that is a pretty good average there.... most all will die off within the first month. But a lot will depend upon what type of situation. For every disaster there are always survivors... for the first month to 3 months or until the food runs out in any given area there will be a basic war of elimination..

Once the food runs out for the most part...those alive will either move on or as a last resort ... resort to cannabilism.

Oh sure they will eat the dogs and cats first then the rats and such... but they will finally resort to eating each other...

They will basically be on their own.... decent people that prepped for this type of thing will indeed have to fight to keep and protect what they have. There is no exception to that issue at all..... because if you have items that the survivors and such want they will do all they can to take it from you.... and if needed ..... you will have to do what is needed to avoid being a number in a hole in the ground...

better if you can plant them first...

Just dig out all the old end of the world movies - this is not a new thing.

It is a very old and tired thing and I think we should get on with our lives and not worry about the end of the world.

We have enough to worry about just existing here and now.

Well i know for 1 i will be forming a community right from the start should the SHTF.

All within the community will have their usess regardless of skills, yes those with skills will form an infrastructure & those without useable skills will be a labour force for helping those with the skills in either farming, building, militia etc much like our current economies.

In effect all citizens will be usefull in 1 way or another.

I think humanity will basically fall into two camps: those that want to rebuild and those that want to live for the moment regardless of the outcome.

Take a look at the “Road Warrior” and I really think it gives an honest interpretation of the fate of humanity and the conflicts that will occur under such circumstances. There will be those that want to maintain their dignity and those that don’t give a #$%^ anymore. Some will toil to produce whatever meager sustenance they can and others will quickly resort to barbarity.

There is actually historical precedent for this. Research what happened during the “Black Death” and you will see how humanity responded. There are numerous reports of particularly hard-hit areas degenerating into total chaos. And by chaos, I mean a true feral existence; unrestrained murder, rape, cannibalism, human sacrifice, etc. Fortunately for us, enough people maintained the ideals of a special dignity in being human and rebuilt civilization.

The unanswerable question is;: If things are so bad that the barbarians overcome the civilized – what happens then?
Me personally, I’d honestly try to maintain some sort of dignity. But honestly, if things were that bad, I could see myself resorting to dining upon guy with the broken leg…

after the initial shtf, the MP's would most likely be stepping in and doing a door to door.
blockages to roads and transport for all survivors to be moved to safe zones or 'refugee' camps, rounded up by their numbers or forced to go.

Best have a good hiding spot within the cities or already be at a place away from the mainstream to avoid being taken.
depending on the scenario it might be a neccessity to leave the area and look for safer surrounds, being in large groups will only get you noticed even more and can slow you down.

Having food and water at hand will save you the trouble of having to look but lighting fires or using lights/making too much noise will be a dead giveaway to your whereabouts.

think first about making sure your in a safe location, having supplies on hand and then worry about finding company to spend the rest of your days with, it could easily take a long while before things are safe enough for these to happen. All depending on who's left around at the end of it all.

actually after the first initial blow of any magnitude... MP's and cops are going to be leaving the area very quickly... they (many do) have families to look after and they are in the very same boat as all the rest... door to door stuff would not be started at first... that would initially be committed by the urchins of the city. All cities have that element of people..

Oh they might try a mass evac, but the chances of it being pulled off with any amount of success because of people already leaving would be very slim... and very dangerous.

but once you do make it out... then we as survivors would be pretty much on our own... to struggle, reform law abiding communities, set up common sense laws and actually enforce them...
and hope against all hope that the government could eventually get on its feet again... but remember that if it is a serious enough SHTF scenario... there will be no govt. for a very long time.... so in that context people who are armed will fight to stay alive... All the people that refuse to handle a gun for what ever reason are going to be the first to go... religious people better make peace before it all starts, especially if they are of the frame of mind that "God will provide"..... Those people I actually feel somewhat sorry for because they are pure food for the criminal ellement...

The situation would be like nothing any of us can imagine... the criminal element will have guns (as they always do) and they will rob, pillage, rape, loot and kill...

As bad as it sounds a beautiful woman will be prime merchandise...and they will be hunted down... slave markets will open up again...and worse.

Now the best part of it is this... from all of that millions will rise up and they will get together in small bands and later into larger ones and the shortest trials in history will take place...

but america will rebuild, it might not be the same as it was.... but it will be smarter and wiser and one hell of alot tougher on a great many things...and perhaps that is way over due...
