By 1987 the IRAS objects had been identified as nine ultra-luminous distant galaxies and an infrared cirrus. My guess is it refers to the hypothesized Nemesis, which was still supported by researchers at the time. However, since then the Nemesis hypothesis has fallen by the wayside in favor of the Tyche hypothesis.
