Police want backdoor to Web users

news.cnet.com

The survey, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, is part of a broader push from law enforcement agencies to alter the ground rules of online investigations. Other components include renewed calls for laws requiring Internet companies to store data about their users for up to five years and increased pressure on companies to respond to police inquiries in hours instead of days.

Not sure what they are aiming for here.

I can for see a future with keyword searches that lead to gitmo style detention.

yet another freedom lost for the sake of "saftey"

However I can see an upside in taking out the nasty people who do horrible things with the net but for some reason when I hear the word police today cash register justice comes to mind.

if, in some sort of future we are policed like that (IE, your web searches can result in imprisonment), let one of these "police officers" try to arrest me - that's all i'm saying.

The ones most worried by this could be police officers, priests, and various other fine upstanding members of the community ( no smutty puns intended )

Hit the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on Google and suddenly you're on a watch list.

This is ridiculous.

Cash Register justice is right. It's just another way to keep us safe and protect our freedoms (which, in case you've forgotten, the terrorists hate us for).

edited to correct a grave grammatical error that would have had the grammar nazis trembling and shouting about.

And what freedoms would that include?

They are just protecting all the freedoms that were actually taken away from us during the Patriot act debacle.
If government and law enforcement want transparency, they can give some up too.

I should have used the sarcasm button.

I guess its time for me to read 1984.

This Big Brother thing is getting out of control.

For some reason I can see the fuzz giving out internet tickets along with all internet devices needing to be registered like cars.

Then the lawsuites start and the mandatory insurance kicks in.

Edit to add

And then tax us to death.

Because we need to pay to be punished.

Bandwidth Tax.
Uptime Tax.
Wow Tax.
E-Mail Postage Tax.
IP Tax.
Porn Tax.
ATS Tax.
you get the Idea

If you all knew what really happens on the internet you would understand what this is about...

There is soooo many scams, thieves, con artists, hackers, illegal virus', and other illegal activity on the net........you have no idea. The internet is a criminals playground.

Ex.

-Spoof websites and e-mails. This happens to millions of people every day, and there is nothing anyone can really do about it. Criminals make their own websites that are clones of other important websites such as banks, and credit card companies, and other places where you input personal information. Then they bait people in with e-mails, and other methods to obtain their personal info. It happens a million times a day, and the only real thing you can do is get an IP address which is usually just a public one and can't be traced to anyone... the victim is left without justice because of the difficulties finding the criminal via the internet.

-Illegal Hackers. Any programmer can learn to make a virus, and then convince, trick, or force someone to download it. Virus' can steal personal information, and physically destroy computers, and spy on you. A virus is very hard to track back to the creator. Law enforcement has a very very hard time with viruses, even though they destroy lives and property.

Some hackers will actually gain access to websites and "deface" them. They will create a "drive-by" bot that will automatically do all the work for them. It will scan millions of websites looking for known vulnerabilities which are REALLY common because of amateur mistakes made by web masters. It will then deface the website by adding in their own images and text, usually advertising for someone or something. Very illegal and hard to track because a bot is usually doing it all.

-Scams. I'm sure you have heard of the Nigerian Prince scams, and the investment scams, and the money laundering scams, and the casino and gambling scams, and the fake product scams, and the eBay scams... etc... all this is very hard to reach for law enforcement.

-Lies. People will try to sell you stuff they don't have. Stuff that doesn't work and is broken. They will sell you empty boxes, stolen stuff, knockoffs, etc....

I can go on and on and on...........

Honestly, law enforcement is REALLY REALLY behind when it comes to internet crime.

I think it is because they just don't have sufficient records of internet actions. It would be impossible to track ALL actions. Maybe in the future it will be easier..

I guess people will complain because they don't want to get caught stealing music and games and programs.

Sadly, you don't seem to understand the concept of unreasonable search and seizure, nor the expectation of privacy.

You are just another of the masses that will welcome law enforcement to override the freedom of the internet into a government-controlled/filtered network.

I support illegal activities. If they can do it (Bush, Cheney, Obama, banking elite, IRS)...so can we. They rob us, we rob them...end of story. If it wasn't "everyone for themselves" in this world, crime would be nowhere near as bad.

Now when it effects joe schmoe, that's his fault for not being educated. I've been on the internet since i was 11, now mid-20s...in that time i have been duped, but i have realized and learned what to look for and how to avoid being hacked, scammed, etc. education and knowledge is what we need, not law enforcement.

Lets be honest John Q. Public dosnt have enough $ as a individual for the police to give a rats ass. This is somthing to protect the media industry. and make money.

Actually, no.. you couldn't be more wrong.

I understand your concerns, but they are all an over reaction. That is expected because you are just another one of the blind masses who react before thinking.

It seems you don't care about internet crime. You don't care about someone stealing your identity and your money. You don't care about someone taking advantage of elderly men and women, and especially children, over the internet. It's a shame... people like you should be in jail... all you care about is YOU. You are selfish.

You support illegal activities.... ok, so you ARE a criminal. That explains your entire stance on this subject.

I figured you were a criminal since your name has 420 in it.

Sorry, I have been on the internet a lot longer.

You are too young to see your own ignorance.

According to your "logic".... anyone who gets robbed, murdered, raped, taken advantage of, or fooled and scammed, needs to be educated?? It's their own fault that they were robbed, murdered, raped, taken advantage of, fool and scammed??

So you put blame on the victim, and not the criminal?

You sir are a lost individual.....

You are criminal and support illegal activities, so I'm not surprised.

This is the type of people that will be 'monitoring' the internet for our safety. Real go-getters. Instead of going after crime, they will be harassing people "on a whim", because they figured "they are criminals".

Just like it is on the street. They never go after crime, they harass every pedestrian they can whenever they get the chance. They never even police themselves, they COMMIT PERJURY and BREAK THE LAW to protect their own friends and colleagues.

These people, are the real criminals, the real terrorists, and the real enemies of the state.

The police set people up every day. There are people spending years in prison because police set them up. Has anyone ever heard the term, "Framed"? This is not something only found in Hollywood movies, this is real. I don't think it's a good idea to give that much power to the police. They already have plenty of power. They can come into your home and shoot you in the face while planting a gun in your hand.

Let me get this straight...you are advocating imprisoning someone because you assume they do not care about people who are being taken advantage of? After saying something as insidious as that, it is no wonder only a few whackjobs will agree with your stance.

If someone is stupid enough to fall for the horribly concocted phishing scams, they deserve to have their information stolen. Like the lady who sent her life savings to the Nigerian scammer, then continued to keep sending it even after she lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Is it my fault people are too stupid to realize what is fake and exercise caution? No.

I used to be one of them defacers back when I was about thirteen. I'm not proud of it, but without them people most exploits would remain zero day and cause a LOT more havoc. I stopped thankfully just before a few friends got locked up for the news worthy whitehouse.gov defacement back around 2000. Trust me. Some of the stuff me and my buddies used to code that we kept to ourselves was never fixed even years later. You should be thanking the defacers for letting the public know how unsafe the web is, and to exercise caution, use encryption, and most of all, have common sense when dealing with sensitive information.

Also, the fact people lie is a given. You cannot attribute that to the internet. People have been lied to or sold broken items since forever. There is no way that should have anything to do with taken away more of our already decimated rights. Again, common sense and caution are much more important then given law enforcement even more power to snoop on the public while invading their privacy.

Viruses are not created by hackers. They are created by malicious crackers who have nothing better to do then be an annoyance. If you're so worried about getting a virus then switch to a UNIX based operating system and never have to worry again. Either that, or again, use common sense and caution when downloading files and keep your anti virus software up to date. I have used AVG Free for years and never have I had a virus damage any files on my Windows computers.

You sound like someone who wants the whole populace tagged, tracked, and followed constantly while the criminals are out committing the crimes they would do regardless. All it would do is take away more rights from the law abiding citizens. Its nobodies business what my search preferences are online, or what I like to research but my own. There is already much more then sufficient means of logging both at the WAN, LAN, Hardware, and Software levels of the internet. How else do you think they track down online criminals? Any company or user who wants excessive amounts of logging on their network is more then free to do so. Keep the government out of our lives.

So moral of the story? Use common sense and caution. Something this generation seems to lack. There is more then enough logging and ability to trace internet actions, and no matter what people will commit crimes if they want to. All your solution would do is create more problems for the people who obey the law and make something that is currently a simple process, much more of a pain in the you know what.
