science.nasa.gov...

THERE IS NOTHING ON HERE TO SUGGEST IT ENDED IN 2007

Dec. 16, 2008: NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. Solar wind can flow in through the opening to "load up" the magnetosphere for powerful geomagnetic storms. But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are even more amazed at the strange and unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics. "At first I didn't believe it," says THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "This finding fundamentally alters our understanding of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction."

The magnetosphere is a bubble of magnetism that surrounds Earth and protects us from solar wind. Exploring the bubble is a key goal of the THEMIS mission, launched in February 2007. The big discovery came on June 3, 2007, when the five probes serendipitously flew through the breach just as it was opening. Onboard sensors recorded a torrent of solar wind particles streaming into the magnetosphere, signaling an event of unexpected size and importance.

WTF are you on about??? it did NOT END its still there, and even that source you provide does not even say anything about it ENDING.

"The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself," says Wenhui Li, a space physicist at the University of New Hampshire who has been analyzing the data. Li's colleague Jimmy Raeder, also of New Hampshire, says "1027 particles per second were flowing into the magnetosphere—that's a 1 followed by 27 zeros. This kind of influx is an order of magnitude greater than what we thought was possible." The event began with little warning when a gentle gust of solar wind delivered a bundle of magnetic fields from the Sun to Earth. Like an octopus wrapping its tentacles around a big clam, solar magnetic fields draped themselves around the magnetosphere and cracked it open. The cracking was accomplished by means of a process called "magnetic reconnection." High above Earth's poles, solar and terrestrial magnetic fields linked up (reconnected) to form conduits for solar wind. Conduits over the Arctic and Antarctic quickly expanded; within minutes they overlapped over Earth's equator to create the biggest magnetic breach ever recorded by Earth-orbiting spacecraft.

so we have a solar storm, and a hole,

OK I admit I got 1 think wrong yes the sun flips every 11 years,

so what is actually responsible for the hole??

and if we have a big storm

will it knock out satelites?

is this something we should be worried about?

yes.

finally a more sensible person,

thank you for your input and please share more if you know more, by the sounds of it you are very familiar on this and I wonder if you actually have information on the sun dial?

Did you read this link?
journals.cambridge.org...
No. You did not.
Here's another.
www.thefreelibrary.com...
Please provide a source indicating that the Sun only has a magnetic reversal every 740,000 years.

No. The "hole" is no longer there. And yes, it did occur in 2007.

"The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself," says Wenhui Li, a space physicist at the University of New Hampshire
Was...past tense. No longer. Not "is".

The solar wind switches polarity very often. It's not unusual to see it happen many times each day. These "holes" (more like a conduit, really) occur quite often but this one surprised the scientists because, as I said, the solar wind at the time had a northward orientation, the same as Earth's

The circumstances were even more surprising. Space physicists have long believed that holes in Earth's magnetosphere open only in response to solar magnetic fields that point south. The great breach of June 2007, however, opened in response to a solar magnetic field that pointed north.
North, the same as the Earth's magnetic field.

Here is why they can't believe their ears: The solar wind presses against Earth's magnetosphere almost directly above the equator where our planet's magnetic field points north.
The only reason we knew about this one is because, for the first time, we had instruments in orbit to detect it. Yes, if a reconnection is occurring at the same time as a CME it could potential increase the severity of a geomagnetic storm. But not because it would expose the surface to the "blast".

Kaku is speaking about the danger of severe solar storms (CMEs) in general. He talks about the problems it would cause for our technology. This is true, but he never once says there is any reason to expect one in 2012 any more than there is any reason to expect one during any other solar maximum, he says "perhaps" twice to emphasize the uncertainty. We currently have no way to predict the occurrence or intensity of a CME more that a few days in advance. Kaku also makes no mention of your "hole". This interview is from December of 2008. As I said, the updated prediction is for the solar maximum to occur in May of 2013 and to be less intense than normal. BTW, Did you also notice he says that every eleven years the Sun's magnetic field flips?

Now phage its my turn to rip you a new one!

You should brush up on your reading comprehension and listening skills, and do some better research (or at least some research) before you threaten ripping anybody, anything, anywhere.

Only thing I am slightly worried about is I've heard on the news that the solar maximum in 2013 could knock out all electronics and bring us back 100 years for a while before we get everything working again. Apparently this solar maximum will be a lot worse than any others. And I think it was in the 90's, (maybe earlier) where power lines sparked and even caught on fire.

Oh and in before the mandatory reply: "the news is a weapon designed by the government for fear mongering & mind control."

Hi Phage,
from what I can gather your opinions are valued here at ATS and I have a question for you regarding this topic is it true that the earths magnetic field is at a weakened state of 10% and if so.What would it take to bring it back to 100% ie pole shift or?.I have been under this impression for a while not sure where I read it.Thx

Yes, the Earth's magnetic field has weakened about 10% from when it was first measured in the mid 1800's. There is even evidence that it was twice as strong 2000 years ago. But guess what? It's still stronger now than it was 50,000 years ago. It changes all the time, getting weaker and stronger.

The Earth's field is not the same all over the planet. Far from it. Here is a representation of what it is really like.

Those localized fields are known to fluctuate in strength and orientation. For the past two hundred years or so there have been localized areas in the southern hemisphere which have a reversed magnetic field. It is these mini-reversals which have lead to the overall reducing in the field strength. It is thought that these localized effects are caused by movement of material in the Earth's outer core.

As to whether or not the changes in the southern hemisphere are an indication of an upcoming pole shift is unknown, it could be but there is evidence that the poles have "tried" to reverse many times since the last reversal some 780,000 years ago. One thing to be aware of is that the magnetic reversals do not happen overnight or even in one lifetime, it is a process that can take thousands of years to occur. That's fast in geologic terms of course but pretty slow for humans.

The bottom line is that the field could start to strengthen again tomorrow, or not. But it is important to remember that while the magnetosphere does deflect some forms of cosmic and solar radiation our true protection is provided by the atmosphere. The weakening of the magnetic field is not a problem and it is not going to go away entirely any time soon.

It should also be pointed out that the geomagnetic storms which can be damaging to electrical systems are actually caused by the magnetosphere. The solar wind causes the magnetosphere to "wiggle". It is that wiggling which causes problems. I wouldn't go so far as to say a weakened field would actually reduce the threat posed by geomagnetic storms but it's something to think about.

I am currently working on inventing a new sunblock lotion that will be SPF 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. I feel once I get it finished I should be just fine during the solar storm. It's not waterproof though so I'm hoping it won't rain.

You let me know when you invent it. I'll bring the lawn chairs and the ice chest full of nice ice-cold Budweiser beer, and we'll watch as the rest of them get fried....

i don't think anyone is an expert in this field, but i do enjoy everyone's view on it whether i agree or not.

Keep going apocolypto, i'm interested to hear what u may have learned about new denver airport. it is amazing thats for sure. and raises alot of questions.

As far as "no such thing as nibiru" goes, i wouldn't be so quick to write that one off. Just because we may not be able to see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We know very little about possible celestial objects that may fly thru this way every so many thousand years. I know people are saying that it's coming in 2012, but they don`t have any more `proof` of that than those who say it don`t exist.

Anyhow, enjoying the read! Please continue...

This is taken from one of the links that phage posted regarding the sun and the magnetic field. About the hole opening and re-closing in 2007. This is copied and pasted from the last paragraph of the link he posted trying to debunk it.

The years ahead could be especially lively. Raeder explains: "We're entering Solar Cycle 24. For reasons not fully understood, CMEs in even-numbered solar cycles (like 24) tend to hit Earth with a leading edge that is magnetized north. Such a CME should open a breach and load the magnetosphere with plasma just before the storm gets underway. It's the perfect sequence for a really big event."

and 2012 still looks real.

None of those are facts... the sun does a flip every 11 years... the earth did a flip 740,000 years ago... the sun didn't put a hole in our magnetic field...
everything you stated is incorrect.

There is evidence for an extremely rapid reversal, ( www.abovetopsecret.com... ) however, the evidence is scarce and there is absolutely none for it occuring in 2012. There isn't even any evidence for an alignment of any sort in 2012. I'm starting to think this entire thing is a hoax and why it was falsly connected with an alignment and all sorts of things and why poeple are putting so much emphasis on it makes me consider a government run conspiracy more praubable than anything else! That maybe this 2012 and New Age crap has a really sinister application. It's brain wash dude! I was totally under it's spell the last year or 2! Something is not right with all of this.
