Thats going to be the future of warfare where you don't hear and incoming fire and its fast as light.

some one seting that up could run when thay see the smoke but i wonder what it would do if thay pointed it at the guy seting it. ether way thay still have to find it as its being set lowchance of that. still a nice new way to defuse an IED

Bad guys response-Paint their mortars with a silver reflective paint?Or set up some mirrors round your mortars.
Would that work?
It may at least slow down the heating process,giving them time to run off.

Gotta watch out for simple lo tech countermeasures to massivley expensive new tech weapons.

Ps that laser needs to be a lot more powerful IMO,as it takes a good while to set the mortar off-the really bright laser glow on the mortar would be an easy give away for those sat near it.

You can setup a mirror but it needs to be clean if it isn't than it wont reflect as much also mirrors are very fragile, not good for a combat situation. Also if you set up mirrors you will give up your position.
The best countermeasure will be I think to make the outer skin from ceramics. But that is expensive.
Im not sure but I think that the laser is in infrared so you wont see it, until the metal starts to glow.
