I have been saving since August to get a 2 new sidearms one for CC and one for open carry, here is a list of the ones I already own.

Glock 22C .40(service weapon)
Sig Sauer .357(former service weapon I bought from the PD)
Taurus Public Defender .410 or .45
S&W 500 Magnum 4" barrel with compensator
1904 Iver-Johnson hammerless revolver .38 short
.380 Keltec

I have $1,800 I can spend what do you suggest? I have "kid in a candy store syndrome" and I can't pick anything...

For your CCW, I recommend the Sig P239 in the .40S&W. If you are a former police officer, you should recognize the round. It is a single stack and completely deburred. A bit heavy, but a well-built hand gun should be! That is my vote!

As for a simple handgun, I recommend the Sig P226 or P229 depending on the size of your hand and your comfort with handguns. Stick with the .40S&W. I believe in trying to stay within calibers so my ammo is interchangeable. I have 5 pistols - all .40S&W. If any one goes down, the ammo is still good. To wit, 3 of my pistols are Sig P226 and 2 are P239 - just so I always have spare parts around if one should go down. I'm not much of a collector, per se, I believe in keeping it simple.

Hope that helps!

If that Kel-Tec P3AT is something you like to CC you might want to consider replacing it with something a tier or two above it like a Ruger LCP or a Kahr p380. New ones though. Like most guns the first couple of production years had their faults.

Between the .40 and .357's you already have you really dont need another OC gun. If you really want one though you're missing a 1911. No collection should be without a 1911.

If had 1,800 in dedicated gun money right now I'd buy myself some quality 1911 like a Wilson, Brown or Baer.

I like the suggestions so far, For the CC I think I will go with the P239 after I try it out of course. As for the OC I am looking for something powerful that can take down someone wearing IIIA body armor, we are running into thugs left and right with body armor nowadays and I do usually shoot center mass.

I've been a fan of Taurus guns for a while now. They offer a good solid product for not much money. I don't see the logic in spending money on a premium brand name myself. If you are a brand loyalist or if you can afford to purchase an expensive gun then go for it. I myself look for the most 'bang for my buck' and have found Taurus guns to be a great product.

You should stick with a gun that has the same method of operation as your duty weapon - the Glock.

In a serious social situation you will default to your lowest level of training, and I would imagine you are very well schooled in Glock drills.

So for carry that would mean a G26, G27, G29, or G30 (personally I chose the 26 but that's down to your caliber preference).

For open carry, choose whatever companion Glock matches the same caliber (i.e. the 17, 21sf, 22 etc).

As a LEO you're also entitled to some serious discounts on Herr Glock's products, both guns shouldn't rack up more than 800 bucks (for you).

I have to agree with the recommendation about Taurus. great values.
However, I also must agree with the advice that the OP is missing a 1911 type firearm - and I would recommend an STI, Inc. in one of several models. Either open or concealed carry, STI pretty much has something for everyone.
My choice of caliber is .45ACP personally, but I've been shooting way too long to change to something "trendy" like the .40SW or .357SIG or 10mm (Miami Vice).

I would suggest:

The Sig SP2340
The Sig P226
The H&K USP40
Kimber got some nice one's too. Maybe over your budget but you get what you pay for

Well I decided to buy a Rossi 461 6 Shot Snub Nose Revolver for another CC, I decided against another OC, I instead am thinking about getting one of the Kittykats like our Tac team has.

Good luck with the Rossi, personally I wouldn't touch one with a stick. I did dabble with an 851 a few years ago, but sold it after having numerous issues.

Quite honestly, a Smith 642 is the way to go in snubbie circles.

What was wrong with it? I honestly have never had any problem with any revolver.

Since you already own a glock go buy a kel-tec sub 2000 in 40 s&w it is a great gun and uses they same clip as your handgun.

for CC try one of the taurus millinium compacts in 9 or 40,or 45 if you can practice enough with it.cops are having problems with glock 40, its just a 9 with the barrel bored out and its beating the pistol up in 40.all other calibers in glocks are just fine. search for police problems with glock 40 if you dont believe me,570,000 hits.for open carry a glock long slide would be perfect, some tatcital teams use them.

Not going to happen I'm afraid. IIIA armour is specifically designed to stop pretty much any practical handgun round up to and including most .357 Magnum and some .44 Magnum loads. Unless you have access to specific AP ammunition (which is usually a relatively poor performer against unarmourd threats) you will have to start practicing groin or head shots.

Well I ended up buying a Panther LRT-SASS that was at the State Police Supply store, and a Rossi .357 magnum lever action from the pawnshop for $125.

looks like I'm a little late. I was going to suggest an FN 5.7 for open carry. pretty good against body armor. For CC i would have suggested a Ruger LCR nice little 38. I personally carry a Kimber 1911 Ruger LCR and Sig P250. I would stay away from Taurus auto loaders. tend to fail when needed.. Why by a VW with three wheels when you can afford the Mercedes
