Israel to shun UN call for Gaza probe: minister

www.google.com

JERUSALEM — Israel told the UN chief it will not conduct an independent probe of the Gaza war as demanded by a UN report, a minister said on Tuesday, two days before the Jewish state submits its official response to charges of war crimes.

"Israel has no intention of creating a verification commission," Information and Diaspora Minister Yuli Edelstein told Israel public radio from New York a day after meeting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

It sounds as though the nation of Israel has no intention of exposing itself to a loss of face. Many war crimes were committed in the Gaza offensive but they will not be held accountable. At least they will do their best to not be held accountable. If their is nothing to hide and Israel is not guilty of war crimes then why shun a verification commission?

Israel DIDN'T commit war crimes, at least by any reasonable standards that are applied to any other country on Earth (Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, NATO, USA, etc etc).

In that context Israel's response has been correct, treating such accusations with the contempt they deserve.

You either accept Israel as a democracy that exercised self-defence and deserves support in what was and still is a very difficult time, or you see Israel as a monster that should never have existed, in which case whatever Israel does will be immoral and wrong. Even their rescue efforts in Haiti.

I'm in the former camp. It seems a lot of posters on ATS are in the latter, and what wonderful company they keep.

I cannot support this report until Sri Lanka is held accountable for war crimes. In the Tamil offensive campaign, civilians were deliberately targeted and abused by the Sri Lankan army - executions squads operated during the campaign (targeting civilians). Unlike Palestine, the break away region controlled by the Tamil's does not have a devolved authority. Sri Lanka has brutally forced them under foreign control.

Israeli authorities may target militants in civilian areas, but Sri Lanka set out to completely destroy Tamil towns and villages. In their eyes, all Tamil's were associated to the Tamil Tigers and fair gain.

The refugee camps, which Tamil women and children were sent to, faced sexual abuse and beatings. You can paint Israel as the devil, but Sri Lanka has carried out the literal definition of war crimes and atrocities. Even brutal ethnic cleansing.

Once the international community has stopped harassing Israel, may be it will turn and punish the true war criminals in Sri Lanka.

I think the Israeli strategy will be to publish it's own response on Thursday and if that isn't good enough for the UNHRC then it'll potentially go to the Hague - "Bring it on".

Interesting that Goldstone has refused an open debate with Alan Derschowitz about Operation Cast Lead too.

If your eating breakfast you should not click in the following link.

Photos of Israeli War Crimes in Gaza

It details what atrocities were committed by Israel in the Gaza offensive. Their is a very good reason why the use of white phosphorous is considered a "War Crime". The continued inhumanities such as the Gaza Egypt wall and the recent flooding from opened Israel dams serve as examples of what the ultimate goal is. It is obvious to the world at this point that the ultimate goal is not defense.

Israel will try every trick in the book as they have:
* Not co-operating with investigation
* Calling report anti-semitic
* Calling lead investigator self-hating Jew
* Calling report biased
* Pushing US to veto the findings of reports

GoldStone report has already recommended if Israel or Hamas does not investigate the war crimes themselves, International Crimnal Court will prosecute them. I hope they live upto their words and bring justice to the criminals. Just imagine if Nazi Germany was allowed to use these methods lol@

Well it seems the UN agrees with you:

www.un.org...

“Given these conclusions, and in light of the persistent flow of other allegations of extrajudicial executions by both sides during the closing phases of the war against the LTTE, I call for the establishment of an independent inquiry to carry out an impartial investigation into war crimes and other grave violations of international humanitarian and human rights law allegedly committed in Sri Lanka,” stated Mr. Alston.

While it seems they have not been held accountable they have requested the same measures as far as an investigation into war crimes that may have been commited as they requested from Israel.

Israel has on par / latest war technology / , and Israel are not afraid to use it on their neighbours , Their weaponry outdates majority of hamas etc etc etc , Because they are so willing to use BIG BOY war toys , is why,im afraid ,they are being pulled up by the Goldstone report ,U.N etc .

We must remember however that Israel is the land given by God to the chosen people. They cannot possibly have done anything wrong. They are the moral standard the rest of the world should live up to. We are beasts basking in their moral light. Alright sarcasm off and to the Israel bootlickers. You all make me sick.

Cheers

Three IDF soldiers have been prosecuted in Israeli's court and other charges have been brought against others too, if memory serves me correct.

Another example of some people's willingness to believe everything negative about Israel, no matter how bizarre, and ghoulishly repeat it ad nauseum.

Some people are like vampires. Posting and reposting sick photos of children, presented to you by HAMAS PR men to gain sympathy.

Don't like schools being shelled? Don't launch rockets from schools.

Don't like children being killed and hurt? Don't store your weapons under their beds.

Don't like getting your arse handed to you by a superior military? Don't spend 8 YEARS firing rockets at them.

Sick, twisted, cowardly bastards who deliberately put their own kids in the firing line and then cry to the world when they get hurt. With an army of people around the world who gleefully repeat their propaganda to anyone that'll listen.

I hope the likes of Livni and Barak do stand in court so they can present their case properly in a court of law, because none of these accusations will stand up to the light of day.

Oh, and what happened to "Innocent before proven guilty"? Guess that doesn't apply to Israel huh?

Oh , haven't logged on for a bit.

Did we adapt a new standard for War Criminals now.

Is "true" war criminals a new measure?

I'm still on the "old" standard , where a War Criminal is a War Criminal.

Yep, for credit card fraud, vandalism and theft if I recall.

Which proves the point that the IDF (like ANY other civilised military) does investigate credible accusations.

Accusing them of deliberately bombing schools and hospitals to cause civilian deaths is not credible, and I don't blame them for not treating it as such.

I believe in the axiom of "innocent before proven guilty". Israel is guilty. This is why they shun an independent commission to investigate the claims. You can not deny the illegal settlements on Palestinian land. You can not deny the illegal use of White Phosphorus. You can not deny the illegal organ harvesting. You can not deny the death of Rachel Corrie.

This is not something new. It is not antisemitism. This is a long documented train of inhuman treatment of anyone that opposes their actions. It does not matter if your Jewish, American, or Palestinian if you oppose the will of Israel you become a target of Israel.

The world is recognizing this and the UN is investigating this. Will anything come of it? I am cynical. Israel simple says it will not co-operate and unless the UN is willing to enact sanctions or kick them out of the UN, the nation of Israel may get off scott free. Again.

So, giving examples (legal text, please) explain how Israel carried out war crimes? I'll give you some clues:- you're going to have to prove Israel deliberately targeted civilian targets. [Even though, under international law, you can justify civilian targets under certain circumstances]

Need evidence that the Attorney General sanctioned and authorised civilian targets. After all, it is the Attorney General that gives the final clearance (for legal reasons)

Oh dear, care to show us the exact place that is written down as a war crime? Screening smoke, which Israel used, is not illegal nor a war crime.

The continued inhumanities such as the Gaza Egypt wall

What has that got to do with Israel? What is inhumane about it, Egypt has every right to control its border with any other place, especially one like Gaza, run by the terrorist orginisation, Hamas!

and the recent flooding from opened Israel dams

another lie, care to show us all exactly which dams were opened by Israel?

Just for you to complain about Israel

Yes, they are guilty, no courts needed, no evidence presented, no defense allowed, just declare the jews guilty!

You can not deny the illegal use of White Phosphorus.

Yes you can actually, screening smoke is not illegal! defense-update.com...

You can not deny the death of Rachel Corrie.

Stupid American getting too close to a armoured bulldozer, she should have moved out of its way

This is not something new. It is not antisemitism.

A lot of it is actually - otherwise why are people ignoring all the other war crimes that happen all around the world, just blaming Israel?
