There was also just an earthquake in the bahamas
12.01.2010 - 22:01:01 6.1 Atlantic Ocean The Bahamas Acklins and Crooked Islands District Snug Corner

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the area shook Haiti on Tuesday, collapsing a hospital where people screamed for help. Other buildings also were damaged and scientists said they expected "substantial damage and casualties. It was the largest quake recorded in the area, said USGS analyst Dale Grant, and the last major one since a magnitude-6.7 temblor in 1984.

"The sky is just gray with dust." Bahn said he was walking to his hotel room when the ground began to shake. "I just held on and bounced across the wall," he said. "I just hear a tremendous amount of noise and shouting and screaming in the distance." Bahn said there were rocks strewn about and he saw a ravine where several homes had stood: "It's just full of collapsed walls and rubble and barbed wire."

Haiti is in a huge crisis now. Even if a lot of people aren't dead/injured, a HUGE amount of people will be homeless now since many of them lived in slums with poor building structures.

There are something around 1.300 brazilian soldiers there, leading the U.N. troops. I hope they're all fine, so they can help all those people in need.

As everyone here, i'm also praying for the people there. And hoping that the death toll isn't too high.

aftershocks continue now...in the 4.5-5 range.

wait till tomorrow's death toll , and multiply that by 4.

Then in the next 2 years the PTS deaths will also add up.
Disease in Haiti is already a problem too.

Huh?
A seperate quake north of Haiti?
Are you sure?

Ok maybe this stuff about the "northern plate moving" is actually somehow coming true ??

We got Haiti falling apart, Cali got hit the other day, and now Bahamas just got slammed with a pretty big shake.

So whats next?

I am seeing that the Earth has built up some MAJOR tensions and now these are being released.

There has got to be more where this is coming from, consider the scale of energy we are talking about here.

We are having some major tectonic events, this is actually very exiting although terribly frightening.

I have NEVER lived through anything of this nature. I have no precedent to go with here.

This is becoming very unique and highly dangerous.

***Prays*** Please make it stop!!!

Well, i've read a couple of things on it now too, but USGS is remaining silent. But it's updated a 2.5 in CA and a 2.7 in Baja California, mex, so i dont know - if the 6.1 in Bahamas WAS real i would think that USGS would have been on it asap.

That is going to be a big part of the long term after effects from this quake. So many buildings must have been brought down.

Where is all of the debris going to go from this? How are the Haitians going to house themselves in the short term? in the medium term?

If there are 10's of thousands of dead..... well.. how do you dispose of the bodies before diseases start to fester on the dead and spread to the living?
Cremation is an option that would be quick and cheap, but very degrading to those who have died. Mass burials are not much better.

I was just looking at the weather in Port au Prince and it looks like the weather is going to cooperate with the rescue efforts. 8 days of partly cloudy, with temps in the high 80's to mid 90's.

weather in Haiti

I would love to help, but it seems there is nothing I can do. I do not have a job, so that negates monetary donations. I do not know how I could travel there to help, nor to I have the specialized skills that would needed in this situation.

my heart goes out to all of those affected.

There was supposedly no tsunamis so that's a little bit of good news.

I can already tell that this year will be full of disastrous earthquakes.
