"SUNGRAZING COMET ALERT: The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) is tracking a comet that is about to make a perilous close approach to the sun: movie. Will the icy visitor survive? Click here for the latest image. (Note: The comet was discovered earlier today by Australian amateur astronomer Alan Watson in images taken by NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft.)"

this could get interesting!

Great find, Kyle

Now i was looking at the SOHO movie theater aswell and couldn't help noticing that the bright white spot to the left probably isn't the comet because it looks pretty stationairy. But if you load the theater with the last 30 images or so you can see something getting closer with every picture. I think that is the comet....

Here's a picture. The red circle on the left is probably the comet.

Ask Phage about the white spot right of the sun. It probably has something to do with spacedust on the lens or a bake-out, whatever that may be....

Anyway, great find. Star and Flag!!!

Peace

Thanks for the thread...will be interesting to watch this unfold. I find it strange it was just discovered today though.

There is a sunspot that is rather active also, I could be wrong but the sun spot seems to be in the general direction of this comet....if so I wonder if the sun will flare out at this 'comet'.

S&F and a bump...

thanks for the bump. Keep in mind that the MPG is very recent, I'm not sure what time zone but it ends at 15:42

Great find!

Wondering where PHAGE is...looking forward to "accessory" comments or "logical" derailment statements.

Very interesting ...

Also, at the end of the video where the object appears from the bottom left, there's another object seemingly moving faster than "normal" at around 9-10 o'clock from left to right. I wonder what that is ...

Ah yes, I believe you are right. The bright object is Venus...so this comet would be the object on the left?

Thanks for that

In 2006 they tracked the 1000th one
they are common, part of the Kreutz group of comets

One of the reasons I frequent this forum.

Are there any estimates on how close it will come? I haven't read anything about that yet. Or is it still too early?

I'm sorry but I am confused, are you saying the comet in the OP is related to the Kreutz? Are there any implications of it being included in the Kreutz family? Also just curious how you would be able to tell if comets are related.

Yes. I agree.

The video sequence is made up of a weeks worth of images and therefore gives the illusion that the 'comet' is moving fast.

There is no doubt that the object on the right is indeed Venus.

There is a meteor or comet approaching from the bottom left of the screen at the end of the sequence but i doubt whether it will be anything of significance.

Also noted the object coming in from the middle left. Probably just another meteor?

Nah, don't worry. I know the locals, they are not that bad.

In all fairness, Phage does appear to know a lot when it comes to space issues. I have absolutly non!! So i depend on the good man for information. What is interesting, though, is try and find NgcHunter and check the answer you got from Phage because as far as i know he is the only one with the same level (if not higher) of knowledge about these things...

Just a little ATS info which nobody asked for....

I see the OP uses the word "huge" but to be honest - i do not believe we can estimate the size from what information we have. And yes, the object in the right side is Venus
. Great find, i will be back to see how the comet crashes into the sun

actually i believe the object is moving very fast! it comes into frame sometime during 1/1/10 and gained significant ground in less than 48 hours. how is one able to tell the size of a moving space object such as the one in the OP

here is a link showing what has happened when comets hit the sun

www.grandunification.com...

here is a link that all skeptics will likely provide

transientsky.wordpress.com...

it states:
his comet is very small, probably no larger than a few meters across. It is unlikely that it will survive its close approach to the Sun.

Yes. Completely agree.

I think you may have misunderstood. I was refering to the OP that inferred the object on the right was the 'comet'

I have no idea of the size of the comet (bottom left last 48 hours) but i suspect it is a typical comet and will be of no significance.
