i just felt an earthquake, it wasnt very big or anything, just enough to get everything in my house rattling and my bed creakin as it knocked back and forth for a minute max,

i was laying in bed awake surfin the web on my laptop when it happened, i live in lincoln city oregon, right on the coast, im monitoring usgs now but they havnt reported anything yet,

either they are slow reporting it/dont know it happened/or not tellin us it happened. last time i felt an earthquake that strong was like 2003 i think, and it made the 10 oclock news.

I don't know where Lincoln City is, see if any of the webicorders in your area shows anything.

Looks like the recorders are still about 6 mins behind when the possible quake would have been. Nothing on USGS, will have to wait and see!

from that list the closest stations are newo, tolo, hebo, and b026
nothing stands out on those graphs, but i think none of them are showing the last 2 hrs yet, though i may be reading it wrong.

lincoln city is almost mid oregon, and right on the coast of the paciic, directly west of salem

There's been some movements along the Fillipino/Pacific boundaries today I noticed...the 5.2.Fuam & 5.7. Japan. Will be watching this area. Would one of you amazing contributers please explain to me how on Google Earth a plate can be moving in more than one direction eg the Pacific plate (west & north-west) or Australian plate (nne, ene and east)? Thanks

Um, yes OK. We had a giggle about that!!! A little bit of animosity perhaps?

@berkeleygal. Please do not post things that get me interested
I shall now be chasing all over the net trying to solve the problem - it's a man thing.

As you correctly state Google Earth shows this:

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/61794b6dc012.png[/atsimg]

If however you look at The Dynamic Planet then you see this:

[atsimg]http://files.abovetopsecret.com/images/member/11939407f5ce.png[/atsimg]

I am probably going to get shouted down for this but it is my honest opinion that actually like so many scientific subjects there is contradiction and conflict and they don't actually know what is going on but cannot admit that.

Until the war between plate tectonics and expanding earth is resolved either by one side wining or by amalgamation, I cannot frankly believe anything they place on either map about plate movements .

It has long been a problem as far as I am concerned and I am trying to find time to study this in detail.

Sorry that does not help much, but bear in mind that if plates move, and parts can move in different directions, then you will get tearing and/or compression. If I ever get this resolved in my head I will get back to you.

Thanks for you quick reply. If indeed the Australian plate is moving in the directions shown, isn't that in direct conflict with both theories? I ponder these questions myself and it really bugs me.

Yes basically there are many many places that seem to conflict with both theories, hence my need to get my head round it. As you say - it bugs me!

If you look at pure expanding earth then there is no plate movement and no subduction and the arrows are meaningless. If however you consider that the deep earthquakes, and the volcanoes, for the most part occur in what are deemed to be subduction zones by plate tectonics, then there must be an element of truth in that theory, yet the arrows seem in contention.

I am pretty sure than there is a middle road. I just need to find it.

I've just been reading (trying to, it's after midnight) an article that concludes that "Surge-tectonic hypothesis" may be the answer we are looking for. I haven't quite got my head around it but if you feel like doing some heavy reading I'd be interested in your opinion: www.scientificexploration.org...
(If 30 pages is too much, jump to the conclusion).

Thanks for that I will take a look. No 30 pages is not a problem.

I guess you must be one of those people clinging on to the bottom of the world by your toes according to the timing!

Your midnight was my 2 in the afternoon.

Hello Oregon! I use to live in Newport and Seal Rock for 10 years in the 80's. I don't recall ever feeling a quake when I was there. I hope you can go a long time now before another one - but it seems the earth is a little shaky right now. Take care!

I think those are the quakes offshore Matata, there were 5 off shore and two on land, the last one a 4.368ML at 138km depth 2010/11/08 00:05:09.30, which hasn't been reported as Felt. Heres a map of them, the 4.3 isn't shown as its on the next days map, it was at Lat/Lon -37.94215, 176.67255

I think that Dynamic Earth arrow in the SE corner is going the wrong way on the Australian Plate, although the one next to it on the Pacific Plate is correct. It should be butting into Fiordland there, not pulling away. There has been a lot of research into this area and last year during the 7.6 quake at Dusky Sound Fiordland moved a few inches West according to the GPS data. Its quite complicated here in NZ though, because at one end of the country the PP is going under the AP (up north) and at the other end its going over the AP. The pivot point is Kaikoura to Jackson Bay ie The Alpine Fault, where it slips SW to NE.

The area above Australia is likely just as complicated.

So the way I see it,
is that if you believe in expanding earth, than it would have to be both.

What IF: Expanding earth....there is going to be 'give' in some areas, while others 'stick'. (I know, extremely scientific terms here) If this were true of the plate Austrailia sits on, than you would have expansion, or pushing away of plates in one area while subduction oposite. Also, what if these 'sticking' points are where deep tears or ruptures occur, due to the incredible pressure/force building up from 'whithin', causing the basalt floods? Remember all the deep quakes we just had this summer?

I think if you were to subscribe to this theory, than it would have to include austrailia, indonesia, new zealand and the phillipines as the area caught in the tug-of-war.

Ahhhhh Puterman, I'll bet you are regreting ever giving me that link now!!!

Did you read that article Zenius linked to? Mind blowing.

All the cover ups. It appears to blow all of the theories out of the water a bit. I need to re-read it a few times.!
