Would be v. interesting to see if it is a trend - it does feel like there has been a rise in magnitude and frequency, particularly in the last 5 days or so - I've usually managed to filter out California but it's bugging me and a graph usually puts me right

Having said that, looking at the cumulative chart for quake mags this year on USGS we're pretty much on target for a year like the last few so I guess it's all quite normal in that respect.

Another sizeable shake (4.8) in Algeria after the 5.1 last week.

The last biggie they had there was in 2003 and was a 6.8. hazards.cr.usgs.gov...

I wonder what's going on in the Med. There's talk of increased activity at Ischia and Ressiv's observation of an increase in tidal waves in the Med connected, perhaps, with the underwater volcano Marsili - and Algeria's in the area. Just thought I'd throw that out there...

Busy day all round I'd say, definitely something going on with the Earths mantle, is there a Solar Flare going on? I don't really follow that side of things.

The NZ database got a bit behind (being the weekend
) and some catching up to do, I think someone came in for the Whakatane (Whale island) Swarm and updated the site while they were in.
Whale Island is an extinct volcano just off Whakatane for those that are not familiar with the BOP area.
Been some action in the Nelson area too, and quite interesting those two quakes out on the Chatham Rise which goes out to the Chatham Islands. Quakes along there are pretty rare, there have only been 13 quakes recorded east of todays event EVER. There were a few 5's right out at the Chatham Islands themselves back in 1999 and 2000, but to the south of the islands.

Calm before the storm??

Whale Island Swarm, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand up to this point in time.
Not a major swarm, we get quite a few around the country on a regular basis, Bay of Plenty gets more than their fair share.
The BOP is a spreading zone, the East Cape is tearing away to the east from the Northland/Auckland Isthmus/ Coromandel Peninsula land mass.
