EDITORIAL: Obama greater than Jesus

The U.S. president - the practical saviour of our times

He is provocative in insisting on an outstretched hand, where others only see animosity.

His tangible results in the short time that he has been active – are few and far between. His greatest results have been created with words and speeches – words that remain in the consciousness of their audience and have long-term effects.

He comes from humble beginnings and defends the weak and vulnerable, because he can identify himself with their conditions.

And no we are not thinking of Jesus Christ, whose birthday has just been celebrated - - but rather the President of the United States Barack Hussein Obama.

For some time now, comparisons between the two have been a tool of cynical opinion that quickly became fatigued of the rapture that Obama instilled prior to and after the presidential election last year.

From the start, Obama’s critics have claimed that his supporters have idolised him as a saviour, thus attempting to dismantle the concrete hope that Obama has represented for most Americans.

The idea was naturally that the comparison between Jesus and Obama – which is something that the critics developed themselves – would be comical, blasphemous, or both.

If such a comparison were to be made, it would, of course, inevitably be to Obama’s advantage.

Today, his historic Health Reform is being passed through the American Senate – a welfare policy breakthrough that several of his predecessors have been unable to manage.

Despite all the compromises, it has finally been possible to ensure something so fundamental, as the right of every American not to be financially shipwrecked when their health fails them. Add to that the biggest ever financial support package in America’s history, a major disarmament agreement and the quickest-ever re-establishment of American reputation.

On the other hand, we have Jesus’ miracles that everyone still remembers, but which only benefitted a few. At the same time, we have the wonderful parables about his life and deeds that we know from the New Testament, but which have been interpreted so differently over the past 2000 years that it is impossible to give an unequivocal result of his work.

Obama is, of course, greater than Jesus – if we have to play that absurd Christmas game. But it is probably more meaningful to insist that with today’s domestic triumph, that he has already assured himself a place in the history books – a space he has good chances of expanding considerably in coming years.

Without, however, ever attaining the heavens....

No other person could have a bigger effect on makind. All you people of liberal views, should ponder what the world would of looked like without jesus.

We would all be living in africa or india still.

The difference is there really is an Obama, he wasn't just made up to unite the religions of Rome like your Jesus dude.

The only time I see him stretch his hands out is when he is going up for a lay up in a game of basketball.

Words that come directly from a teleprompter. Besides, Obama uses the word "I" a little too much to be Jesus-like.

So he is from a different continent. How does he defend the weak when he failed to help his own brother living on less than a buck a day?

You mean he plans on re-writing the history books.

If Obama ever wants to be even remotely compared to Jesus in any way, he should give back all the millions he has made at the expense of others. He can start with what he has received and continues to receive from Fannie and Freddy.

The person that wrote it really has a serious fetish for Obama's Chocolate Pecker...

I really think even saying that is a bit over the line, but comparing a money making politician who has proposed some radical things that are very alienating, hasn't done much but talk, and then using health care which I DON'T WANT and apparently I'm still PAYING FOR anyway as the reason for a comparison to Christ is so insulting i'd have to spit directly in the face of any one who had the gall to say it to my face.

I'd have said worse to make my point in the opening line but I'd violate the toc... But That's how insulting to some that comment and editorial must actually be to many people.

Well, let's just wait and see who's worshipping Barack Hussein Obama in 2000 years.

Is it liberal to suggest that my forebears were likely living a very fulfilling pagan experience...hunting, farming, making babies, getting soused...at about 2000 years ago?

I suggest you study the timeline a little...maybe investigate what pagan really means. 'Cuz as much as Obama ain't Christ, you don't have much of a handle on the the history of the Western World, either.

I saw this video where he said the word I way too much. Wouldn't you love to know who writes those speeches? Granted, the first few "I"'s he was obligated to speak, or else lol -

No chance of that, I fear. The pockets are already lined, and the offshore accounts probably well filled.

Not so sure Obama wants to be called Jesus, but this is an indicator of what some of his most adoring fans think of him.

Frustrating insight, IMO, as it leaves nothing to be reasoned with. You can only shake your head and laugh a pitiful laugh.
