I learned that getting mad was a good thing, but posting while mad was a bad thing.

Well first and foremost let's us all wish me a happy ATS Birthday! It's a couple of days late granted but I've been busy so I thought I would write this out today. The inspiration for this thread came from my good friend JaxonRoberts. He authored a similiar thread several months ago in which he described his first year, what he learned how things are different for him now and tips & tricks for new members.

I joined ATS at a very turbulent time. The election was in full swing, political discussion dominated the ATS boards along with a lot of other prized stories. I was also fortunate enough to join in a time where we had MANY contributing members who pumped out threads everyday. We've seen a decline of this in recent months, those of us who are use to what ATS membership use to provide, certainly hope this is just a passing fad and that we will pick up where we left off soon enough.

I learned that getting mad was a good thing, but posting while mad was a bad thing. I realized that the best of posts are those that are thought out and re-written and re-read a dozen times. They did NOT include attacks on the poster or the topic, they did NOT include rude comments or dismissive arguments, and they most certainly did NOT include me attempting to "one up" another poster my showing my knowledge of the topic at hand was better than theirs.

I say I have been schooled by members, but really I was educated. Nobody ever learns anything by being ridiculed and looked down upon. To new posters, this website is a treasure trove of knowledge. Some say it's run by the CIA, other's thing it's the most in depth discussion forum on the internet. My views align with the ladder.

Established members will sometimes say that tenure has no bearing on how you are treated here on ATS, I can say this is not true. I am guilty of looking at join dates before making up my mind about a posters comments on many occasions. It is wrong and we should look to remove this sort of thinking when discussing topics at hand. Let's be realistic, this is the internet and we have no way of knowing how intelligent or how comprehensive one's knowledge base is on any given topic simply because of when they joined the conversation.

In closing I would like to also thank the staff for making ATS possible. Some like to complain about what ATS has become and mind you I have certain quams with the site, however I realize that it is the ONLY place that is built this way and caters exactly to my discussion needs on a variety of topics.

New members, feel free to reach out to some of the older members, most of them may seem busy or too long standing to give a damn, but honestly they want to help you as much as you want help with things. Don't rely on the staff so much. A lot of your questions can be answered by most of the members here, mods or not.
