I wanted to mention that I am a fan of ghost hunting shows, I'm not a believer but I am very interested in the paranormal. This is quoted from Kirby Robinson's blog: Eye of the Paranormal entry for Wednesday, October 29th, 2008, referring to a correspondence with Kelli Ryan, client of Paranormal State in Season 2's "The Messenger" episode.

Link: Ghost Theory: Paranormal State - Caught Faking Entire Show
(I can't paste the entire entry here because of the character limit.)

Here's some of the quotes from Kelli:

Chip Coffey play acted at being psychic. He was given every bit of information regarding our case and the identity of the ghost of the past-previous owner of our home who died 28 years before we bought our Gold Beach, Oregon home. I am a medical hypnotherapist and respected medium and psychic with many satisfied clients. We contacted PRS after our ghost, Bill Wells, began asking us for help. The PRS team represented themselves as being part of Penn State University, which was only the beginning of their deceptions. We initially asked for help because there was some sort of entity in our downstairs hall and adjacent rooms which my own spirit guide warned me from dealing with on my own.

A&E was very pushy about urging us to contact Jim Gardner, the driver in Bill Wells’ fatal accident. We told them we would try again, but we didn’t want to harass the man. We contacted him shortly after discovering Bill’s identity. The point of us contacting PRS was to get Bill the help he was pleading for. Bill wanted people in the town to know there was no wrongdoing on anyone’s part and, indeed, it was only an accident. He also wanted Jim to know he was happy in heaven and he wanted his friend to be happy and live his life without guilt or sadness. A&E said Ryan Buell was very good at convincing people to take part in their investigations and how his participation would help the healing process. Sumit David promised us nothing on the show would be done which would be injurious to Bill Wells’ loved ones. Nothing would prove to be farther from the truth than this most heinous lie.

Ryan took great pride in coming up with “This shadow man that you see in your home…” He practiced saying “shadow man” in a deeper register than he usually uses and was quite pleased with himself. He requires everyone on his team to worship him and show and express their admiration of him to everyone. Behind his back they express their disdain, but they all want to keep their job. Ben Wolf and Sumit David (director and producer at A&E) kind of laugh about Ryan’s attitude.

They chop-edited everything. KOBI (NBC Station in Medford, OR) is doing a story about Bill writing a book. ... The scary, fearful references are regarding an unidentified entity which was causing harm. This is the reason we needed help. We love Bill. Bill protects me from the other entity. Bill saved my life in an identical car crash I survived two weeks after moving in this house.

They asked us to leave to do their walk through filming with Chip Coffey on the first day. We were told it was so he would not pick up anything from us regarding the dangerous entity in our hallway. We already knew he had all the information about Bill Wells, our ghost.

We sent the news article detailing Bill’s accident and funeral along with deeds to show the list of former owners. Sumit David promised us nothing on the show would be done which would be injurious to Bill Wells’ loved ones.

A&E promised us they would not show these accident photos. No one in Gold Beach, including Bill’s wife, knew the extent of his injuries, other than head trauma. That his head was crushed and severed was kept secret. This was devastating to those who loved Bill.

I was asked to pretend I didn’t know any of the information for effect so that viewers could have the sense of the story unfolding, the way it had to us. ‘There would be no harm in presenting it again as though they made the discoveries on their own as they were the ones who ordered the accident report.’

This entity frightened the PRS team and terrified Chip Coffey who refused to deal with it. Chip had me deal with it and hid in a chair in my living room. You can see me in the hallway in the show, but they pieced together dialogue to make it appear I was evicting our ghost, Bill Wells. The PRS crew ‘faked’ cold spots in our home. They explained to us that they were using a six-pack of beer to attract Bill and draw him out so they could photograph him. ... After the episode was aired, I realized the ‘Cold Spot’ Ryan and Chip were ‘discovering’ in our guest room was one of the Budweiser cans!

You need to know these details because what is on film is so pieced together and voiced over and edited so deceptively, it was difficult for us to recognize which parts were which. We could recognize the video, but the audio didn’t match.

Of Ryan Buell and Chip Coffey, she says:

They have a very enmeshed and unhealthy relationship. They need each other and cover for each other and conspire together and yet just under the surface you can see how much they are threatened by each other and how much jealousy and contempt they have for each other. It would take very little pushing to get them to turn on each other. They would easily blame the other for all the deception.

The show is awful...The "leader" Ryan whatever his name is.. is just a typical fame seeking loser with 0 talent.. Nothing is more hilarious than hearing Ryan say in the start of every episode "and sometime we're WARRIORS!" Every crappy episode Always has something creepy occur.. what are the chances?? I guess depending on the producer of the show and editing tricks... it's great.

Take a show like 'Cheaters' its been on 10 YEARS now and only recently it was PROVEN to be ALL staged.(any intelligent person knew it was fake) but I have a feeling alot of people believed it was actually real..

I'm surprised that you're surprised !

I remember watching the trailer when this program was first aired and well ... what can I say ?

But like you I do enjoy watching some of the paranormal programs ... but as an investigator myself I tend to end up shouting at the tv.

I remember watching the trailers for this TV show before it aired, I thought it looked cheesy, so I watched an episode and it IS.

Everything was so fake, and dont worry, you can tell it is chop shop edited.

Paranormal State and Ghost Hunters are both rediculous shows. The only one worth watching is the show called "Most Haunted".

I was always suspicious of Paranormal State and particularly Chip Coffey and Lorraine Newman. But I actually came across this when searching for any sites that examined all the ghost hunter shows. I think its obvious that these programs use drama in their programs but what concerns me is whether there is faked evidence.

I never watched it but i'm not surprised, I love most haunted but am well aware of taking everything as concrete, especially with stuart and karl

I'd love a show what doe's proper investigations, if nothing happens, nothing happens! don't need to make bumps and whistles, then maybe others might take it a little more seriously!

The only ghost show I watch now is Ghost Adventures and I think it's the best ghost show out of all of them.

I'm starting to prefer Ghost Adventures too. There's always the possibility that everything on these shows are bunk, but until I see evidence of it as with Paranormal State, I enjoy watching them and discussing them. It would take a first-hand experience for me to believe anyways.

The scratches on Zak's back in this episode are interesting:

Hate to burst your bubble but all these shows are fake. "Most haunted" and "Ghost hunters" and all the rest.

You cant expect a seriouse investigation when its a T.V station thats footing the bill.

Thats why without fail something always happens. On ghosthunters its "Spirit communication" via the k2 meter. On most haunted its mysteriouse knocking sounds.

"Knock out how many of you there are" sound farmiliar.

Anything thats created for the purpose of entertainment is faked and cut to death.

The sad thing is i still watch them but mainly for comedic value.

Anyone who watches most haunted will remember Dereck acchora.

"Sam, Sam who is it" Comedy gold. lol. He used to get possesed every other show or something. Theres no doubt that these shows are entertaining but if your seriouse about the paranormal. You'll end up tearing your hair out.

Rant over.

Its the same with all the project camelot videos and interveiws. Many embelished and faked stories feed to the ignroant to increse revenue.
It really is sickening watching that woman swallow all the %^&* thats comes from the mouths of every lunatic she interviews.

What's the most fake one out of them to you?
What's the most "real" one out of them to you?

How can one be more fake than the other. There both fake.

If i had to choose one id prefer to watch it would be most haunted. I may be bias because im a brit but there has been a couple of bits of footage that have had me scratching my head.

But theres been times when there so transparent its unbelievable. They go to enter a different room for example and then pause an make up an excuse to hold off because the effects person or "Knocker" has'nt got out yet. Things like that.

They relly a lot on the blair witch factor amongst the crew. Freaking each other out to the point where they believe somethings happening. You do find out about some very interesting places though.

What about you?

I can believe it- my husband and I make fun of "Elfy" on Paranormal State with her nasal problems and the fact that she claims she's a high wiccan priestess.

Nevertheless, I prefer Ghost Adventures now, althought all of them are campy in their own rights. I never liked Chip Coffees ideas of brining psychic kids to haunted locations and terrifying them. I bitched out A&E for making such a show and im glad they reformatted it to Psychic Kids without Chip Coffee

I dont watch any of them, I watched like 1 whole episode between most haunted and ghost hunters.. so I didnt like them and I thought they gave paranormal investigators a bad name.

And none look real.. There is nothing real when someone fakes everything.

Although on a side note to this..

My friend was at one of his other friends house.. They was watching Ghost hunters or something... one of them ghost shows.. Anyway.. the people at this guys house including the guy thought everything on the tv was real. When my freind asked them several questions and they half ass answered him he then said Can you see now this is fake? They all stated NO No its real...

Anyway I dont know why people put so much stock into tv, if u wanna see if something is real go do it urself... its not hard..

I have to agree with a couple of posters, .. Ghost Adventures is the shiznit, and it seems the most authentic of all the ghost shows.

I've seen paranormal state a few times, ... and it really does look way tooooo over edited and setup. ... and that guy Ryan seems totally full of himself, I wonder if does the solo deed while he looks at pictures of himself.

Ghost Adventures Rocks !!! they actually came to my town when they investigated La Purisma Mission, I used to work there actually as a volunteer, and have been in all the rooms they were in, I even slept in the same bed that Zach did ! how cool.

Ghost Adventures is the most real and best ghost show (in my opinion).
Ghost Hunters is too boring and looks staged.
Ghost Lab is ok.
Most Haunted is good.
Paranormal State is complete crap.

I have to give Ghost Hunters a little credit. They're willing to go, "OK, nothing's going on here" and don't have to throw some paranormal activity into every episode. They also try to find alternate solutions to a lot of the things that occur. However, some times these alternate solutions seem a little goofy and other times they fail to find an alternate solution to something that, to me anyways, does not seem paranormal. A lot of what they find seems to be 'creepy feelings' rather than any actual evidence. I didn't watch the show from the beginning, but have been told it started out a lot better and they'd debunk more stuff and weren't so quick to assume things were paranormal activity.

I've only ever watched one episode of Ghost Hunters International and it seemed significantly cheesier and I dislike it. I do not consider these two to be the same show.

Paranormal State /facepalm everything about this show is unbelievably fake. I went on their forum and made a rage thread when they tried using the ganzfeld experiment for paranormal research, when the experiment is known for causing intense hallucinations, which imo is detrimental to finding anything paranormal.

Yeah when it first came out i though my prayers for a seriouse paranormal show had been answered. Then it got to popular. The pressure to produce results got in the way as it always does, and it just became a roadshow like all the rest.

Even if Jay and Grant are'nt aware that someones creating some of this stuff. It's so easy to debunc from your arm chair that its painfull.

Lets take a piece of footage that they class as some of there best. The prison where the "Entity" moves towards the camera and then apparently turns around and vanishes again. You cant tell me that is'nt a someone in black robes that did'nt realize there was a camera there. Then when they did they turned around and ran back the other way.

Whether the rest of the team were aware ot not is debateable. But it looks fake to me.

There is one instance that had me baffled though. When then blanket gets pulled over grants feet at that hotel. Hard to see how it could have been staged. Maybe this could be one genuine bit of footage.
