An interesting article explaining the Science behind a "Brain Fart"...

Nice to know that I'm not the only one that makes mistakes similar on what is talked about in this article.

For your reading pleasure!

Source: Discover

The latest research seems to indicate that brain farts are a unique type of cognitive mistake. Unlike errors caused by lack of information or experience, or by distractions, brain farts are innate. They have a predictable neural pattern that emerges up to 30 seconds before they happen. When you are absorbed in inward-focused thinking such as daydreaming, a collection of brain regions jointly called the default mode network (DMN) starts furiously popping away. Neuroscientists don’t agree on exactly which parts of the brain compose this network, but they now believe it is one of the busiest neurological systems. All that activity may help explain why the adult brain, which represents only about 2 percent of the body’s total weight, consumes up to 20 percent of its energy.

Great post! I really enjoyed reading that, and it makes a lot of sense. Sort of one of those age old questions I haven't ever seen a reasonable answer for.

Very cool article!

Seems like part of the normal equation for modality of thought, I find myself wondering if this isn't also part of the innovative 'eureka' functionality, where a solution to a problem long considered seems to come from the most unusual and disconnected activity one could imagine.

Thanks for posting this!

Interesting. Great find.

I wonder if it is in any way related to the pregnancy stupids.

I always thought that brain farts and verbal diarrhea were connected! I guess one logically follows the other doesn't it!

I wonder how closely related a "Brain-Fart" is to a "Senior Moment"...

2nd line...

I wouldn`t be surprised. It sounds like they have started to measure latent cognitive associational behaviours in the brain. If the process starts thirty seconds(at least the measured activity) then it is plausible that the brain is sorting through short and long term associations(remember that it isn`t just cognitive memory but all sensory allocations whose basis for associative relevance may just be experience based. Cool find and one that suggests that the `using only ten percent of our brain myth` is indeed just a myth...

I'm glad I could bring you out of lurking mode!

Thought it was an interesting twist on science. I wonder if they got a grant to do this study...

I think that the term "brain fart" is a term based on pre neurolical measurement capacity and was meant as a reference to observed non sequiters in conversational situations...making the term as it origanated a colloquial slang if you will. The significance of the study should not underscored (despite the humourous connotation...).

I think i had an alien plug itself into me in the middle of a brain fart, and decided to give me brain cancer by creating a time loop, OCD broken record virus. Oh wait i think there's medical term for that. Or maybe an extra terrestrial ethereal octupus landed on my head and is attemping to hack my brain.
it tickles..
