Not sure if this video has been posted yet.

The Union: The Business Behind Getting High is a 2007 documentary film by Canadian filmmaker Brett Harvey. The film explores the illegal growth, sale and trafficking of marijuana. Its theatrical run was limited to film festivals. The film follows host Adam Scorgie as he examines the underground market, interviewing growers, police officers, criminologists, economists, doctors, politicians and pop culture icons, revealing how the industry can function despite being a criminal enterprise. The history of marijuana and the reasons for its present prohibition are discussed, often comparing it to the prohibition of alcohol in the United States in the 1930s, suggesting that gang drug warfare and other negative aspects associated with marijuana are a result of prohibition, not the drug itself. The gangs that grow and traffic the drugs are likened to those that appeared in major U.S. cities during the Prohibition, with the intention of profiting from the sale of illegal alcohol.

I watched "The Union: The Business Behind Getting High" last night
and I have to say, it is probably the best documentary I have seen.

Pot smoker or not, YOU WILL ENJOY THIS FILM!

This is a great film, uncovers many of the myths surrounding marijuana use and also exposes the failure of law enforcement. I highly recommend, even if you are against cannibis use.

Agreed, on part 4 now. I have seen similar ones, but this one is pretty good. There are more problems with prohibition, because it artificially inflates the price of the plant, giving it a higher street value which attracts the local street pharmacist to profit from it.

If it ever became legal, the value would drop, and crime would drop with it. those organized crime people will have a hard time finding another source of revenue when their cash crop is no longer funding them.

I like the part where they go over the underground rail cars, and it was on top of a mountain (from what it looks like) and that it was fueled by diesel generators. i think he said that there were 10-12 underground rail cars... these used to be a grow-op.

the way this video is going, i think its implying that these grow sites are everywhere! (which i think is true anyway)

But so far, so good.

I dunno....
The type of people that are making insane profits off of complex pot operations, are probably also dealing in other things too. So drying up the illegal pot market wouldn't put the worst criminals out of business, just my buddies tryin to make an extra buck.

The argument is always something like...well if it was legal the government could tax it and make a a lot of revenue. So what? Why do i want the government to have control of a product that isn't dangerous and is easily accessible? Why should they get the money and not someone that i know? Why should the government be the middle man? Don't they waste enough of our money? Besides the government will never legalize it. They probably make more off it being illegal.

Keep it illegal, just decriminalize it.

The only thing missing from the Entire episode is probably the comparison between America's and Amsterdam’s crime rate. I really enjoyed watching and i'm all for legalisation of the "drug" even before i viewed the video.
I know that through all of my own personal observations and encounters with this product i have never witnessed violent behaviour nor even heard of people becoming aggressive from inhaling.

The fact that this plant is illegal is a conspiracy, Not to mention a complete breach of human rights to enjoy ALL of what nature has to offer.
Just my 2cents.

If I remember correctly cannabis was made illegal basically to protect the new paper timber/paper industry. Always the money.

Cut down trees which take years to grow back instead of making paper from hemp which takes only a season.

Copies of the Declaration of Independence were passed around the colonies on hemp paper. There was even a law mandating farmers grow it back during that time.

Another good docco on this subject is Grass narrated by none other than pot head woody Harrelson.

Oh, so it's OK to post this video now? I posted it in the old forum and got post-banned for it as well as having the whole forum shut down and copping an earful from a certain OverMod.

Seems a bit like a double-standard to me.

Anyhoo...........

The documentary is brilliant. I have shown it to at least 20 people over the last few years and they have walked away with a completely different view of this harmless herb. 2 of them in particular were adamantly steadfast in their 'gateway drug' belief and now they make a point of calling other people out on the fallacy!

This needs to be printed on DVD's and handed out in the street! Everyone needs to see this

they will never be able to control it or tax it effectively. you can easily grow it. it grows almost everywhere. thats why its called a weed. but anyway, its stupid in my opinion to keep it illegal, when more dangerous substances should be focused on like meth, heroin, and all the harder stuff out there.

why waste tax dollars on a supposed harmless substance?

why not funnel that money into programs that combat the harder substances?

yea they COULD tax it like cigarettes and alcohol, but it wouldn't be possible unless there is some sort of control. (you can still grow it) For decriminalization; it doesn't solve the problem. it still inflates the street value, and would still fund organized crime.

not to argue with anyone but i just wanted to tackle the notion about it being a weed and can grow anywhere easily

sure thats correct, it will grow, but what will the quality be?

the truth of the matter is that quality takes care, sure you need good genes, but if the environment and nutrients arent perfect you will have a product that is not up to standards

sure you can just put a seed in a field and come back a few months later and call it marijuana, but it wont be the same quality a medicinal user would need, nor would it be the quality you would be able to get from a larger company producing it under quality controlled environments

sure it can be very easy to grow, or it can be a very specific time intensive project to produce the quality of the high ends that are available today

with that said, i truly dont agree with the notion that we cant find a way to control and tax it

im not positive but i doubt tobacco is that much harder to grow then marijuana, but we dont see people growing much of their own tobacco, just like we dont see many people making their own liquor, sure they do it, but theres still a huge market for giant liquor companies

this is a capitalistic society no matter how far we move away from it, and as long as its capitalistic, there will always be a market for just about anything

Oh Wow!!!!

I think ATS is becoming very very popular.

It seems a lot of the time a video is posted on this website
it soon gets removed for copyright, because that video was
posted on google late 2008 and was still working...
