- The remains of Adolf Hitler were burned in 1970 by Soviet KGB agents and thrown into a river in Germany on direct orders from the spy agency's chief, a top Russian security official said this week.

Khristoforov said according to the documents, Andropov's decision to destroy the remains of the Nazi leaders and their family members was motivated by the fears of the KGB and Soviet Communist Party leadership that Hitler's burial site could become a place of worship for supporters of fascist ideas.

Looks like this is official confirmation that the soviet story that's been floating around for about a decade is actually the real one.

Now, before you guys pull out the forgery possibility, I want you to remember: The Soviet Union was a tremendously massive country, that was very poorly organized, and which collapsed suddenly and violently. It is not just likely that records went missing, records DID go missing in the collapse and subsequent feverish desire to cover up a great many things.

It is nice to have confirmation that the skull & jaw fragments are of Hiter. While the romantics among us may continue to believe he escaped (I'm not denying it's the more exciting option) I am fine with accepting the official line, just for once

Just few days ago there was a news report that it was of a female. Anyway, doesn't matter now...the guy is dead long ago.

How can a burned corpse thrown in the river support the none existent evidence? The skull is that of a woman and the jaw has been identified based on rough sketches made by Hitler's former dentists of which it is not known if they supported Hitler or not.

Hitler got away. No doubt.

There is doubt, this statement by the Russian government provides doubt that Hitler got away. Sure, it's a nice fairy tale, but in reality there is very little chance that someone as hunted and recognizable as Hitler escaped as Berlin fell, and then lived on the lam till his death with no substantiated evidence of his demise afterwards. In fact, the article outlines several solid reasons why he knew and accepted the bunker would be his tomb at the end.

The only reason the "Hitler Escaped" myths developed were due to the Allied forces never discovering any evidence of Hitlers suicide besides a body that could not be identified as his. The Soviet acquisition of his remains explains why the Allies never found them, and the Soviets never told the Allies that they had the remains.

Whether the skull is actually Hitlers, or Eva Brauns, or even one of the Goebbels, doesn't detract from the substantiation of the Soviet claim. After 40 years in the ground, I should think they would just have grabbed whatever they could off a cadaver before throwing them in the river. That does not mean the bodies were not whom they are claimed to have been, when they buried them there in 1945.
