It's the best quality video I've seen. I'm no expert in rockets but it doesn't look very rocket-like to me. The earlier suggestion about an experimental rocket dumping loads of water might be more plausible, or it's a light show of some kind. What's strange to me is the blue light and the way the spiral is emanating from the centre. If it was a rocket surely it'd have to be stationary while spinning to make sense.

Also worth noting the bbc says it's over a military base. Looks cool whatever it is

It's possible. There's been a lot of talk about EISCAT and their atmospheric research done in Norway. They are a publicly open organization, so you can check out their site and even experiment logs. It's nifty stuff.

THOUGH They have taken 3 hours out of their research log, ironically during the same time.

Someone before mentioned it had a Nitrogen component in it which would match the colour I think. Also, Wiki says that the RSM-56 Bulava tests are being luanched from submarines just to confirm what the OP and myself earlier said

Doubtful situation. The rocket spiral theory is a solid one, but it doesn't account for the blue emissions, the long trail, the black hole like type it produced, and the 250KM wing span of the thing.

actually, Im sorry to tell you this but usually the guy is right.. pisses me off but why deny the correct answer for rubbish. Between that, and the FACT Thtat someone already posted that the Russians confirmed that it was a failed rocket attempt... what more do you want?

While researching Skjold military base "the one featured in the BBC news report to be supposedly below the phenomenon" my post here on ATS featured 7th on the first page of a search for "Military base in Skjold" WOW!!!


Seriously though I did find some interesting information about the place and why didn't no-one tell me Russia and NATO were in a conflict over a new oil reserve in the Barents Sea!!! 3 Russian's were killed and a Norwegian injured!


It's all here folks, last years news but still geographically interesting to todays story!

As for the base it says on this site that there are at least 910 people in the base. 450 in the infantry battalion and 460 engineers.


These figures mean nothing to me but might get picked up someone in the know. Is that a lot of engineers? Could they be engineering all through the night for some special rocket/projector/worm hole/big firework/christmas play/spinning shield?


Oh and "Skjold" means shield in English. Not sure if thats significant but I'l throw it into the pot anyway!

"The Russians" didn't confirm anything. A RUSSIAN, an anonymous Russian, confirmed it.
