I normally don't write/comment in political threads but thought the people of this board might be interested in this.

Putin: Will Consider running for president in 2012

MOSCOW – In an electric four-hour solo performance on live television, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he will think about whether to reclaim the presidency — one of the strongest signals yet that he may run again for Russia's top office in 2012.

Kind weird I suppose, I had thought he might be content controlling things from the sidelines.

Some 2 million questions were submitted by telephone or on the Internet to Putin's marathon television show, which was similar to previous call-ins he did when he was president. It clearly demonstrated that he continued to call the shots, overshadowing his designated successor, President Dmitry Medvedev.

Anyway it's a pretty basic story, but still something to think about. It would be interesting if he came back into the presidents office, however, I don't think things would change all that much. He already has the power...just food for thought.

Depends on what is currently going on behind the scenes now. Putin could be setting up the stage for himself to regain the Presidency and remain the president.

Has to be a reason he is hanging around.

I believe you make a good point, he has been hanging around all of this time... It will be something to watch come 2012, I could see Russia electing him again.

from the OP's article:

"If Putin doesn't rule out running, neither do I rule myself out" for 2012 election, Medvedev told journalists in Rome when asked about Putin's remarks. Medvedev also said that he and Putin will act as "responsible politicians" and reach an agreement on the 2012 elections to avoid "elbowing one another" — echoing comments made previously by Putin.

Everyone knows that Putin is pulling the strings. But Medvedev is not going to step aside for Putin in the next elections. The strings will be cut, but they can't be cut until a time much closer to elections. The simple tools Medvedev can use to overtake Putin in popularity by the election day are:

A) proclaiming that the "people of Russia should be the ones to decide which of the two they want as President"

B) using a military conflict to boost his popularity(in KOSOVO!!! on behalf of the Russian ally Serbia, against perceived American and European attempts to violate international law and break up/weaken Serbia). Presidents usually experience their PEAK popularity/support levels in the early days of such significant military conflicts or attacks. The Serbs would love Medvedev as their savior and Medvedev's support in Russia would rise.

C) relieving Putin of his duties as Prime Minister about 6 months before elections and just before the start of the military conflict. While informing the populace that Putin's dismissal was only to prepare for elections and to give him the chance to show the Russians what he can do without any strings....or some such excuse.

D) In election campaigning, attacking Putin's reign as a time of intimidation of the media, falsified and unfair elections, nepotism, and over dependence on oil. Saying that voting for Putin's "quarter of a century reign" is just too damn long(2000 to 2024--the next terms have been extended to six years each with a win in the 2nd term in 2018 certain through unfair elections) etc. And to actually take public action to ensure free and fair elections.

Indeed, the "Medvedev Vs. Putin" show would be very interesting to watch.

Disclaimer: my beliefs regarding Medvedev are heavily influenced by my expectations of a future fulfillment of the Fatima prophecies.
