I Love how you clearly know so little about rap music and stick to the mainstream artists...

Soulja Boy is a complete different style of Rap, its more crunk, and he doesn't even spit lyrics about guns and drugs. How can he be a wanna be when he has made millions from his songs? (which I f*cking bang out in my car and in the gym) They are motivational and different - even Snoop Dogg has praised Soulja Boy Tellem for brining a different style to the scene.

And how can you forget UK rappers like Dizzee Rascal, JME, Wiley, Tinne Tempah to name a few who have used rap to turn their lives around and remove themselves from the Gang culture of London. Using creativity and the power of lyrics instead of guns to express themselves. They are becomming role models for the younger generation and are publicly against gang culture. Is that not a good thing?

I would rather my kids listened to Rap than Heavy Metal and Grunger crap

Basically as a musicologist and observer of social values.

Original pre-80's to early 90's Hip-hop - It was about being comfortable with what you haven't got materially but make up for it with soul and wisdom and a non-materialistic but generally optimistic attitude even with the most melancholic of Hip hop.

Pre-Mid 90's Hip hop - This was the downward spiral - although not all bad, in fact hip hop branched into many other genres (drum and bass, rock, metal, punk, Ska etc) - But elementally Hip hop became diluted with commercialism and materialistic negativity.

Although we can only ever judge the era, and not the music.

Well I know very little about individual artists & songs, but still love tunes of various genres. I'd have to agree that a lot of hip hop is ignorant and just plain dumb! Now, I've heard some very enlightening songs, which no other genre could come close to. Really wish I would have jotted down the song, because it's now lost to a single experience Overall, I'd have to say you're correct from my point of view.

When I was in highschool I was in a richy suburb. A lot of my friends listened to ignorant hip-hop, that just talked about the same stupid things over and over again. Sipping lean, drinking 40's, gettings hoes, etc..I actually learned to block it out so well, that it took me a while to realize the few hip-hop tracks that we're actually genius! I'd have to say that many of my friends who listened to bad hip-hop ended up in alot more trouble than the ones who listened to rock & roll. This doesn't prove causation, though; just a correlation.

you should refine your OP. "Hip-hop" is not what you think it is.

The mainstream hiphop is NOT hiphop. it is just a money making tool. If you want real lessons and truth find underground hiphop. REAL hiphop. If you think "lil wayne" is real hiphop then you are just as ignorant as the children you speak of in the title.

Well who is the parent? If it is so bad just put your foot down and be a parent and not a friend. Love your kids but let them grow up positively. BTW remember the rolling stones? Didn' t they have some dubious lyrics?

While I think a lot of hip-hop is hollow music teaching shallow values I have to disagree about it raising children. It wouldn't be raising any children if parents actually did their jobs and kept children away from music with bad messages or music with content that is intended only for adults.

There are also a few rap artists that do have messages, such as Immortal Technique (who raps about the NWO quite often) and Nas (If I Ruled the World is an awesome song - and that's coming from me, a METAL lover)

I think it all comes down to parents, stop letting the media raise your children and then blaming the media for something that is your fault. If there is something you think is a bad influence then keep them away from it or at least put it in the proper context when your child encounters it.

You should do the right thing and protect your own kids. Help them understand. Give them the tools and knowledge to make the right decisions.

The others.... let 'em fail. That is what the big Media is doing. They air this garbage precisely to cause failure of the other guys' kids. It is a weapon. It works well. Rap has stupified millions. Capitalize on it! Rap makes it easier for other people to succeed. Don't worry about the millions of dollars the rap artists are making. They'll most likely lose it all anyway. The Media management is ripping them off anyway. Look at all the big stars that end up broke.

o_O - A topic I can really get into. How has it " stupified millions " ? If anything, rap has made me a lot smarter. You've really gotta have -- not only street smarts -- but a brain to understand it. The lyrics are so complex you gotta use your brain through the whole song to absorb it all. That's why I love it. And I can't help but laugh when I hear them rapping about their millions, chains, watches, cars, clothes, ect. I love it.


Maybe it's because I am only 25 and have been listening to rap ever since I was a little kid? I dunno. I find it is the only music I can relate to. There are some really good songs with good messages in them though. T.I. makes a lot of good songs. " Live In The Sky " for example is a really good one. Also, Akon's " Nobody Wanna See Us Together " is another one that is just beautiful.


I absolutely love rap beefs as well - I think that's what makes rap so unique. And i'm not talking about Biggie and 2pac - that's old and played out. I like Nelly and KRS1 beef. Shawty Lo and T.I. Ja Rule and 50 Cent ect.

I don't see why so many people hate on Lil Wayne either; he is a lyrical genius. Rap is just a beautiful genre of music. It takes so much to make a rap song. I find it fascinating how these rappers come up with these unique beats that just blow my mind and not only that but they KILL IT with some complex lyrics and hooks that just mesh together perfectly.

OMG! I LOVE RAP!!!! All I do is bang rap all day and just vibe to the beats and internalize the lyrics. It just makes me a happy person. And like some other guy in this thread said - it is so motivational - especially when you are working out!

For that matter Rock and Roll is raising our kids to be crazy axe mudering, sex obsessed morons, right? Because all rock and roll or heavy metal, whatever label you want to smack on something, talks about worshipping satan or murdering people, eating their flesh, etc etc.

Maybe the crap that is played on mainstream radio/tv is garbage, but it is insulting to stereotype an entire genre based on a few clowns.

Just my .02, but there are plenty of hip-hop groups that promote healthy thinking and righteous action. There are even some groups you would label explicit that merely explain their background and upbringing. Many of them use that to teach a positive lesson.

Poor parenting is raising our children to be ignorant, racist punks. Not that I think they all are, but if anyone has to take some blame the parents/caregivers are first in line. Parents are scared or don't know how to parent.

Sorry if I come off a little mean. Watch this video, listen and read the lyrics that are on screen. An example of what hip-hop can be when its pure and "spit" with purpose

This is Lupe Fiasco with his track "Muhammed Walks" which he rapped over the same instrumental that kanye west used in "Jesus Walks." Lupe's is much more thoughtful and carries significant meaning.
