Cognitive dissonance is the reason that theories not accepted by "conventional wisdom" tend to be suppressed or rejected. It is not a new phenomenon as the now accepted heliocentric view of the Earth was once rejected as an alternative theory inferior to the accepted geocentric view of the world. Copernicus did not see his own work published until the day he died and his work was, in 1611 placed on the list of Forbidden Books issued by the Roman Catholic Church and not removed from that list until 1835. Galileo paid an even greater price for his part in the advocacy of the heliocentric system and was put on trial by the Roman Catholic Church and placed under house arrest and forced to recant publicly his "alternative" views. This was in 1633 and it was not until 1998, some 350 years later that the Catholic Church recanted their forced recantation placed upon Galileo and vindicated his heliocentric system that is now accepted as law but was once just an "alternative theory".
