Oh please. A bow doesn't determine the strength of a President or a country.

In fact, I would hope that someone sitting with an army about ten times the military power as mine SHOWs that they like me.

People in the US forget the atrocities we have unleashed on the Japanese people killing 200,000. The effects can still be seen today. Both on their country and here. don't forget that we took Japanese Americans and put them into concentration camps, taking away their homes, businesses, and any livilihoods to live in stalls. About 120,000.

We have had so many troops occupying Japan all this time.

We can stand to show a little humility.

You can bow all you want, most Americans feel bowing to any Autocrat is WRONG, especially an Emporer. I thought we got rid of the Autocratic government style a few centuries ago. Of course if you want, you can start petitioning to proclaim your God as Emperor or King.

In fact, I would hope that someone sitting with an army about ten times the military power as mine SHOWs that they like me.

Japan is not allowed to have any military, study history. Why are they not allowed to have a military is what you should ask.

The atrocities? C'mon, a little to strong of an adjective their. Maybe something like uncalled for, or maybe immoral. And what,, we as a nation did to our own people, has what to do with Japan's Emporer?

And for your benefit, the Nukes saved more lives of the Japanese(not to mention Allied Forces), than it had taken.

We have had so many troops occupying Japan all this time.

You damn right we have had troops their for way too long. It is about time we pull back to the Atlantic and Pacific Rim defensive positions and let the world police it's own selves.

We can stand to show a little humility.

Humility? So that is what prostrating oneself is called now?

Well although i think you find it more appalling that the current President is black, and that is why this is so poignant.

I'll have to agree with you, because the Japanese have stated embarrassment, yes this does wreak of weakness. especially with the need to show some backbone to the rest of the world with all the challenging that's going on... Iran, Pakistan, Afganistan, North Korea... etc.

Obama is in the unfortunate position of trying not to offend anyone, repair the U.S. image "Bush might have had a little part in this" and trying to BE correct...

I think though that if you review some of Last Pres. Bushes adventures in etiquette, I'm sure you'll come up with some more fun incidents...

I've noticed a few times, in the past few months where Obama has not been told what and what not to do, when it comes to protocol and etiquette...

You need to read a little history about the atrocities committed by the Japanese during the war before you go getting all "high and mighty" about the US. Don't forget who started the war by attacking Pearl Harbor. You might also read about the Bataan death march. If that doesn't get your attention read about what the Japanese did to the Chinese - it would have made Dr. Mengele proud. (he was a Nazi in case you don't know).

To equate the US actions to those of the Japanese in WWII is an insult. You should be ashamed.

Could Obowma be a Manchurian Candidate president. I mean it seems he goes out of his way to piss off the American conservative base which as we all know is not very smart. I'm conservative and sane...many though are not!

Perhaps he can't help himself...He's been brainwashed to do things that hurt America. Perhaps someone could compile a list and start a thread with that supposition. What you say Slayer?

Bowing is indeed a complex issue in Japan. (I don't know about other countries).

It requires a knowledge of how deep you should bow, then you add in, your hand position, (clasped, at the sides, open palm up etc). Do you look up, do you look at the ground. Then there is the question of how long you should hold the bow. Generally the greater the length of time, the more respect (some would say subservience) you are showing.

Fortunately, most Japanese understand that westerners all wish they were Samurai or Karate Sen-sei and poorly try to copy the bows to appear respectful and honorable.

In short the Japanese understand that we mean greetings and we respect you, we are just too lazy and ill mannered to study and learn the forms properly.

All you have to do is watch one Karate movie and you'll understand how Bowing should be handled. Are we entirely sure Obama wasn't born in a cave?
My issue with all this is that the Japanesse Government is now involved in Making Obama appear better then Bush. How sad is that?
Yes Obama is Very Intelegent, yes he sky rocketed to the presidency, Yes I would have LOVED to have had him on my sales team when I was selling cars. Is he the anti-Christ, probably not, is he going to make things better, probably not, better, Probably not. Does he have to be so freaking irritating about it?!?!
Bush wasn't very intelegent, so he got some leway, but Obama? Come on!

Since you are one of the Americans who think bowing is wrong, are you doing something about it? Contacting your lawyer to sue Obama? Cmon what are you waiting for, if you do believe what you are saying is correct then why wait...it's a good chance to bring Obama to court, right?

Hey so you think Obama is muslim, hurray!! guess what ...that's what O'rlly Taitz a lawyer, thinks. Probably a good chance for you to take Obama to court...cmon contact the lawyer, she would be more than willing to help you with your cause of removing a "muslim" from Presidential seat. Do something about it. o patriotic, outraged american. If you really do believe that's true, why sitting there...go sue him for lying. I bbet you have tons of evidence to prove that, right?

Obama was not in any Japaense news I read and watched today. Could you remind me who Obama is again?

Don't single out Japan, or Asia for that matter. Our prez is on a worldwide bottom kissing spree. The bow is just a tiny part of a bigger picture.

I am not an Obama fanboy, I've lost many points proving that, but I have one thing to say. Do you want jobs? Do you want your economy fixed? Do you want help in the wars? Well, he has to kiss everyone's bottom in the world to get things back on track. We may have the biggest arsenal, but we also have the biggest debt. I am not too concerned about what Obama does to fix the U.S. economy, but I am hoping he will do something. I'm a little tired of watching my military retirement dollars shrinking in relation to the yen.

Nitie Nite. I will be back for my flaming tomorrow.

My issue really isn’t with his bow. More along the lines is that he has been acting a tad bit too much like a butt kisser when it isn’t needed. Then he can’t seem to make a decision

When our Allies are embarrassed then you know there is something afoot. It's one thing to show cultural respect but too much Kowtowing makes one look weak. One could only imagine the type of groveling that went on behind closed doors in Beijing.

Bowing is a sign of respect and humility.

Saying "behind closed doors in BEIJING"???!!!
What ever do you mean?
BEIJING is CHIIIINNNAAAA!!!

I see no reason to flame you.

Jobs and economy should have been a priority from day one. Besides dishing out money and one crummy stimulus package, what else has he done to improve the economy.

His policy seems to be a wait and see approach.

No reason to butt kiss over the war. The ones helping us are the ones who have been helping us. Don't anticipate any new ones jumping in.

Furthermore, the necessary war may soon be over. Look at the recent news or some of Slayers threads and you will see many are already making withdrawal plans.

I just think Obama is going out of his way to prove to the world that his administration isn't like Bush. Everything else is secondary.

When did ignorance become an opinion?

I guess it's the politically correct thing- bow before the monsters.
Few here seemed to mention how the Japanese committed horrid war crimes. These wonderful beautiful people liked to throw babies in front of MG turrets, they also killed priests and burned down churches in the Philippines, they slaughtered countless innocent people and with the collusion of Thailand they were able to control the circulation of rice and other sundry goods in Malaya and other parts of SE Asia ultimately controlling the masses through starvation (of course their whores and mistresses ate very well) . Makes me sick cuz my own family over there worship these people. MY own kids also like Jpop and other Nippon produced crap. I am constantly reminding them of history but they're kids...
This is still a petty issue. However, I've changed my position a bit- NO AMERICAN SHOULD EVER BOW TO THESE PEOPLE OR ANY PEOPLE. AND YOU PEOPLE THAT INSIST UPON THIS ARE FASCISTS OR ANTI/AMERICAN BRITISH ROYALIST PIGS. (no offense some of my best friends are brits)
my grandfather fought the nazis in WW2 and to say that our people went over and inflicted untold suffering and misery on these poor Japanese may as well knock us for killing those poor defensless nazis and raping and murdering their women and children.
For those members that stood on this side the fence, thank you- I almost left ATS for good having been convinced that it was made up of a bunch of wannabe Japanese idiots until I saw some of your posts. True, they have a beautiful and sophisticated culture but as people they are as just as vicious and bloodthirsty as anybody else and THEY SHOULD be bowing to US not vice versa.
I know this sounds racist but it's the best I got. I would gladly take a bullet before bowing to these murdering elitist pigs.

RE: Slay

I am only trying to emphasize that the Japanese do not care much about the bow. I see this as a domestic issue in the U.S. I'm starting to think that Obama does have a redeeming quality, and that is his first class butt kissing ability. I have not agreed with anything he has done, but I recognize a need to improve our standing in the world.

RE: jam321

I always enjoy reading slayers threads, and have followed more than a few of them. I even gave them a star for their reply to me above. I think that we need to get in on the Asian action before they leave us behind. Making nice with all the countries over there is very important for our future.

RE: R0BCROW75

My great-grandfathers were both in WW2. They both hated Japs. I have a Jap wife and hafu kids. So what? Every male in my direct lineage has been an American serviceman, including me, and this line can be traced back to before our independence was won. I hear your opinion, and I repsect your right to your opinion, but in return you must respect my right not to give a rat's rear about it. I can have a Jap wife if I choose, and I don't care what you think.

I like Slayer's threads, too.

Anyways, I'm not adding anything new here but personal opinion. To me, this just isn't a big deal. We have many serious reasons to have issues with Obama. I sometimes feel all these petty mud slinging issues only harm us who fairly criticize Obama for his policies (and not a harmless social faux pas).

It feels like when we dwell on such silly issues like this, it only makes us look like desperate and 'Oh, the Obama haters are whining again' in that we're salivating so hard to criticize him that we'll grab at anything.

So I do have some opposing feelings to Obama but this just isn't one of them. He goofed. Move along to stuff like the mess that is the health care reform bill and cap and trade and leave the Japan bow, the unworkable DVD's to the queen, and his lost bid for the Olympics alone.
