BREAKING: TVNewser has heard from multiple sources that Lou Dobbs will announce he is leaving CNN on his program tonight at 7pmET.

A CNN spokesperson could not confirm nor deny that Dobbs would make an announcement about his future at CNN or that he will be leaving the network.

Dobbs originally joined CNN in 1980.

We will be watching and updating.

Update: The NYTimes confirmed with an executive that Dobbs will "announce his resignation," which is "effective immediately," and that the show tonight "will be his last on CNN.

mediabistro

I have read that he makes a point of challenging the president.

I have read that pressure was applied to get him to leave.
(can't fire him, no reason, so he must agree to quite)

Funny enough, he may be moving to fox news, which the president already tried to ban from white-house press.

Lou Dobbs, the longtime CNN anchor whose anti-immigration views have made him a TV lightning rod, said Wednesday that he is leaving the cable news channel effective immediately.

“Some leaders in the media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond my role here at CNN and engage in constructive problem-solving,” Mr. Dobbs said just after 7 p.m., suggesting that he would remain involved in the civic discourse, but perhaps not on television.

“I’m considering a number of options and directions,” Mr. Dobbs added.

Wednesday’s program will be his last on CNN, one of his employees said earlier in the evening.

Mr. Dobbs’ contract was not set to expire until the end of 2011. He told viewers that CNN had agreed to release him from his contract early.

Mr. Dobbs informed his staff members of his intentions in a meeting Wednesday afternoon, catching some of the staffers off-guard.

Well known for his political positions, Mr. Dobbs is an outlier at CNN, which has sought to position itself as a middle ground of sorts in the fractious cable news arena. The CNN employees said Wednesday that they did not know if Mr. Dobbs was moving to another network.

Mr. Dobbs met with Roger Ailes, the chairman of the Fox News Channel, in September. At the time Mr. Dobbs was viewed as a potential hire for the Fox Business Network. But a Fox spokesperson said Wednesday, “We have not had any discussions with Lou Dobbs for Fox News or Fox Business.”

Mr. Dobbs has been with CNN since its founding, save for a two-year stint at a Web site called Space.com. He has evolved over the years from a straight-laced business anchor to an outspoken commentator who rails against illegal immigration and taxpayer bailouts, among other subjects.

Lately, though, he has saved most of his opinions for his afternoon radio show, which made its debut in March 2008. It is on the radio show that he talked repeatedly about the conspiracy theory claims that President Obama is not a United States citizen. When he mentioned the citizenship issue on CNN over the summer, his bosses were forced to call it a “dead issue.”

More recently, Mr. Dobbs’ views on immigration provoked a protest by Hispanic groups. Members of the groups complained that CNN was allowing Mr. Dobbs “to spread lies and misinformation about us each night.”

Last month the New Jersey State Police were called to Mr. Dobbs home to investigate a report of gunfire. Mr. Dobbs suggested that his family had been singled out because of his views on illegal immigration and border security.

Thank you very much JBA and MO.

Having the wording as well as the video really completes the story.

I was flipping channels and happened across this live.

Sounds like he's going into politics. I imagine 'Mr. Independent' would probably run as an 'I' then... I guess we'll see.

He'll always have my respect, more so than other newsreaders simply because he would ask things like... "Is Bush fulfilling his daddy's dream of a New World Order?"

He knows what's up.

Did anyone else notice he was getting death threats?
A bullet even went through his home...
I'm guessing they wanted him to shut up?
Or else.
They made smear campaigns and everything, to tarnish him.

My guess is he was getting more pressure from the inside of CNN to leave. He sure doesn't fit in with the rest of that network.

I can respect anyone, regardless of their opinion or political slant, if they have the stones to speak their mind and then, stand by it through hell and high water.

Bonne Route, Lou Dobbs!

I suspect that both he and CNN were getting pressure form the White-house.

Notice he is"not very supportive" of the president and the presidents actions.

Well I wish Lou well. He is right about illegal immigration and a whole host of other issues. I hope he runs for office. If he is on my ballot then he will get my vote. We need more straight talkers like Lou in this government.

I sincerely doubt this is pressure from "The White House" to shut him up. It's just not worth it with someone this much in the public eye. It's not a "win" for anyone. The more likely "shooter" (if it wasn't a stray bullet from a random hunter) would be someone from south of the border (there some real trouble still coming soon on that front, in my opinion, and it will be far worse than the "muslim" terrorism we've experienced thus far).

I also disagree that he doesn't "belong" at CNN. I find him one of the more balanced anchors/reporters/pundits of all the networks combined.

I agree it sounds like politics may be in his future...have always thought he should do it. He has a more level head than most politicians and new entertainers out there.

Now, if he goes to FoxNews? That would confirm for me that the end of days are (is?) here...would simply blow me away.

I very much respect him for sticking to his opinions. Unfortunately it seems that CNN wants to only report one side, just as the other MSM outlets do. CNN certainly seem to be promoting the White House agenda instead of questioning it.

There needs to be balance in journalism and we just can't seem to get that anymore. What has happened to all the investigative journalist? It seems they have to hide on the comedy channel disguising themselves as a comedy show. or they have to get their own radio show.

No wonder we are in the mess we are in.

Lou Dobbs is leaving because he was rightfully criticial of things, and like wise others were rightfully critical of him. He stopped being a news anchor and started to become more of an opinionated presenter, and likewise as he chose to bring in his own opinions, others held their own opinions.

Lou has been round for sometime now... a shame his leaving, and I found his fairwell speech rather nice and well neutral (I think he was trying his very best to be so)..... that being said, I predict certain folks rallying around making as if his opinions were silenced. Lou chose to have his opinions and criticisms, and others had the same right to hold their own opinion and criticisms as well. Nobodies opinions or criticisms have been silenced and Lou made choice of leaving himself. We should all just wish him well, put aside our bitterness and look back to his 30 odd years of reasonably good journalism. Iv had my differences with the man, but I do respect him for some of his efforts to report the news, and some of his sound opinions.

Lou was one of the few focal points of reason in the country that sadly plunged into darkness -- from frivolous attitude to illegal immigration to looting and raping of the middle class.

I always hoped he would go into politics. Now, maybe, just maybe, that will happen. I would vote him into any office under any conditions. Godspeed Lou.

Lou Dobbs has been putting forward his conservative opinions for some time now... and when did that people had their opinions. But through all his time he has never been removed from CNN, and no evidence suggests he was removed. He made the decision to leave because he got sick of people being critical of him while he was being critical, and thats that.

just as the other MSM outlets do.

As in not being Fox news? Im pritty darn sure no media outlet wants to carry the same reputation.

I think it is a shame Lou is leaving, but his recent transformation into Obama basher has only showed me how he cannot be objective because of a little criticism. It was after Obama mentioned Lou in a speech on immigration reform that Lou turned on him. He will probably wind up on fox.

If Obama or the White House was behind any pressure to silence Lou, he would be announcing it to the world. Let's get real.

Me thinks the bullets going through his home and possibly killing one of his family member is what forced him to do this choice.

When thugs can intimidate medias, we're far gone...

Will this turn into Mexico where drug dealers are killing journalists?

You know that bullet didn't even penetrate the siding of their house? It was most likely a stray hunter's bullet.

He asked alot of hard questions that made people uncomfortable, so it's not that big of a surprise.

I know the Pro Illegal Immigrant folks are probably declaring a national holiday...

I hope we hear from him again, irritating those dullards in D.C.
