i lol at all the people saying fake ... like they actually know what a meteor impact looks like just after impact
I know at least that meteors do make craters with smooth, homogenic sides, and that they expel all the dirt and spread it around the crater instead of piling it up on the edge.

Also, if the meteor made that hole why are there two marks, one on the middle and the one that burned to one side.

Richard Kowalski denies this was a meteor.

Still I find it funny that the Dutch news speaks of a hole of only 9 meters wide and 3 meters deep.

It does actually pile up around the edges. We have one of the best preserved craters in the world, i just went there last weekend. When youre driving up to it, it looks like a two mile wide mountain with a flat top....

The pics of the latvian crater look pretty real to me.

I will call this a hoax.

The shape of the Crater is wrong.
No up lift on the crater rim, it looks like dirt from the hole is left around the hole.
The so call meteorite should be buried under the crater not setting there like someone set it in a hole,
The you tube video in not a meteorite they do not get hot enough to burn like that,
The dispersal pattern of the material from the crater is imposable for a impact there should be streaks of material from the crater across the ground where the car is parked like rocks and dirt from the crater, there is none. More like a blast from explosives placed in the bottom of what is now the crater.
And because the materiel in the hole is light colored and the dirt where the car is parked is dark lighter colored ejecta would stand out and could not be missed.

A percentage of the material ejected from the crater will fall back into the crater and round to bottom there should not be a cone shape bottom.

This crater does not look like ether a simple crater and complex crater that happens on earth.

I will tell you what i see is a waste area at a open pit coal mine,
A group of jokers working there took a drill rig for drilling blast holes and drilled a hole then set off a 8 to 12 bags of ANFO to form a crater and make a fake sonic boom.
Then they piled a bunch of coal and rusty scrap metal in the hole and burned it (The you tube video)

This accounts for the dark almost black dirt on the surface. (coal dust from haul trucks at the mining operation)
The black chunks (stray chunks of coal picked up when stripping the overburden at the mine) in the crater wall and the light materiel of the crater(overburden from the open pit.)

Another thing that is strange if it was a meteorite is why someone would dump a truckload/s+ of black materiel in the upper right corner of the photo after the impact. it clearly was put there after the fact and looks out of place it is on top of the materiel from the hole/crater.

I'll back you up on that.
Too many Right Angles involved both in the hole itself and the debris.

I'm calling hoax. If this was a true meteorite it would not be on fire. In fact if this was a true meteorite you would probably be ok to pick it up minutes after it landed. The outside of the meteorite would be as hot as if you left it in an oven set at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes or so and the inside of the meteorite would still be as cold as space.

And to the guy worried about radiation, as a meteorite falls 90+% of the meteorite is burned off which is where all the cosmic radiation is "stored". So the risk of radiation is very low. In fact you would probably receive more radiation flying in a plane at 36000 ft.

Ok. Even if it is very disappointing to you and me especially, because I wanted to believe that something cool has happened in my country. This is now officialy a HOAX.

Team of Latvian and Estonian experts after doing research at so called "crash site"... Have found no meteorite but instead some pyrotechnic stuff and traces of shoveling. They say that the bank is too high and it is too deep for meteorite. The work has been done obviously by a people group. It was probably done to lure more tourists and popularize region.

Case closed, yeaahh!

Sorry to disappoint you!

"burning sand" yep right.. I see sand burning all the time. Can't hardly keep the stuff from catching on fire.. really tough when you are at the beach and the stuff catches fire under your feet... keeps me busy throwing salt water on to keep it under control...

NOW... take a look at the youtube video at about 44 seconds in. Looks like remains of some circular object on fire that is protruding out of the bottom of the crater. I am betting it was a satellite or some other space junk.

What Was It? Experts Investigate Massive Crater in Latvia
Monday, October 26, 2009

RIGA, Latvia — Scientists were investigating Monday whether a large crater found in a meadow in northern Latvia had been created by meteorite. One expert said it was likely a hoax.

Experts in the Baltic country rushed to the site after reports that a metorite-like object had crashed late Sunday in the Mazsalaca region near the Estonian border.

Uldis Nulle, a scientist at the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, said his first impression after observing the site late Sunday was that the 27-foot wide and nine foot deep crater had been caused by a meteorite. He said there was smoke coming out of the hole when he arrived.

However, Dainis Ozols, a nature conservationist who examined the hole in daylight on Monday, said it appeared to be a hoax. Ozols said he believes someone dug the hole and tried to make it look like a meteorite crater by burning some pyrotechnic compound at the bottom. He added he would analyze some samples taken from the site.

You are joking.... right? (I don't know because I don't know *you*.)
This is not *really* your source for the unusual and mysterious in life, where you come to see if anything interesting and out of the ordinary is happening?

About this meteorite in Latvia, the Havaria website is still listing it as "cosmic event".

I was wondering that yesterday night when I saw the video. . It looked like just that. . Some smoldering compound dumped into a hole and filmed. . What was odd was the unusual media attention, like the event was managed. .

Viral marketing?

Why would someone/s go through all that trouble to hoax a meteorite impact?
It doesn't make sense.
You may be able to fool you-tube...but modern science?
