nine high-school students in puerto rico have been charged with assault after authorities accused them of throwing eggs, rocks and sticks at police officers.
The altercation occurred as students sought to protest the recent layoffs of nearly 17,000 government workers. They learned that Gov. Luis Fortuño was attending a function at a neighboring public housing complex.
The government says the layoffs were needed to help reduce a $3.2 billion deficit.
