In 2006, an Iranian UAV acquired and tracked the American aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan for 25 minutes without being detected before returning safely to its base.

This war also saw the only confirmed air-to-air helicopter battles in history of warfare with the Iraqi Mi-25s flying against Iranian AH-1 SuperCobra on numerous occasions. The first instance of these helicopter "dogfights" happened when on the starting day of the war (22 September 1980), two Iranian SuperCobras crept up on two Mi-25s and hit them with TOW wire-guided antitank missiles. One Mi-25 went down immediately, the other was badly damaged and crashed before reaching base. The Iranians pulled off a repeat performance on 24 April 1981, destroying two Mi-25s without incurring losses to themselves. According to some unclassified documents, Iranian pilots achieved a 10 to 1 kill ratio over the Iraqi helicopter pilots during these engagements and even engaged Iraqi fixed wing aircrafts

Point is you nor US intelligence knows exactly what Iran is capable of militarily. It's a risk that is sure to have dire consequences.

To some how assume Iran has watched the US wage a war on Iraq and learned nothing is foolish. Iran has the Moskit (Sunburn).

"The NATO designation SS-N-22 ‘Sunburn’ is believed to be designated P270 Moskit, the air-breathing variant of the naval missile 3M80 (the designation 3M80 apparently referring to the Mach 3 speed of 1980 weapons). It may have been designed originally to enhance the effectiveness of Missile Cutter Brigades (that is, units of missile-equipped FACs) and Destroyer Brigades hitherto dependent upon the Malachit or SS-N-9 ‘Siren’. It is used on "Sovremennyy" destroyers (eight missiles on each) and on "Tarantul [Tarantula] III patrol ships (four missiles on each). Iran does not have to sink an American carrier, simply sinking one or two slow moving tankers would be enough to stop the movement of oil through the straights.

Note that another reason to attempt control of Iran is the oil reserves, the third largest after Saudi Arabia and Canada, although Canada's reserves rely on unproven extraction technology. Iraq has the forth largest so you can see where energy control is also on the agenda.

If the US and Israel attempt to launch a preemptive air strike against Iran as has been formulated and the Iranians, now armed with Russian anti-ship missiles either launch their own preemptive strike or respond immediately to a joint U.S./Isreali strike, all U.S .naval units in the Gulf will be in very close range to the Sunburn missiles as well as the SS-NX-26 Yakhonts missiles (speed: Mach 2.9; range: 180 miles) deployed by the Iranians along the Gulf’s northern shore. There will be no area of the Persian Gulf that will be out of range of either of these missiles.

Israel's nett land area amounts to 22,072 square kilometers, Iran is the second largest country in the middle east at 1,628,750 square kilometers, Iraq is only 438,317 square kilometers.

In the event of a war people seem to forget that the countries around Israel have been subject to Israeli aggression, it matters little what other Muslim countries feel about Iran, the chance to "get even" may override other concerns, more so if they see Israel take hits from Iranian weapons.

To underestimate Iran's ability to defend itself overlooks the military supply chain from both Russia and China who have already been promised oil rights.

The scenario played out in the link below allows for Israel launching a Sunburn at an American Carrier and blaming Iran Vis. the USS Liberty.

So where is the most decrepit Carrier in the American fleet? The USS Enterprise?

Interesting. I thought Iran had not attacked anyone since Biblical times. Thanks for bringing that to our attention.
