Bush had a hand in this. He forced the Nobel committee to give this to Obama to make him look like a joke. Make no mistake people. This is the right wing making Obama look bad. Don't fall for it. Obama is a good and decent leader and will bring peace and hope to all nations.

Not anymore they dont.

People would award a rapist if he just whispered "I love you" over and over as he violated you.

Every president since Washington shot up Pennsylvania has been little more than a rapist telling you how much he loves you.

Too many people just bite their pillow and believe the words. Always have.

I dunno... I think that his work towards diplomacy are incredibly laudable...

And evidently I'm not alone... Because he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

:-)

I love it!

Talk is cheap. That's the problem here. If they had given it to him after his 4 year term, even if he had mixed results, people probably wouldn't object at all. You can't give the award purely on "intent" alone - especially when he commands an army that currently occupies 2 countries and regularly bombs inside another. There has to be some substance to his ambitions. No matter which way you look at it, he doesn't deserve the award at this point in time.

Rod Serling Preparing To Present Nobel Prize

The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs, and explosions, and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, ideas, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy. A thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all it's own for the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is, is that these things can not be confined to the Twilight Zone.
~Rod Serling.

Mind boggling.

New Nobel Laureate Donates Prize Money to Local Charity

Rather than indulging his aspiration to pay off the mortgage on his home, UC Berkeley professor George Smoot decided to donate his half of the $1.3 million prize he received for winning the Nobel Prize for physics in October to a local community foundation.

Shortly after receiving the award with John Mather of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Smoot said he decided to donate his cash prize to the East Bay Community Foundation, an organization that directs donated funds to nonprofit organizations for charitable causes.

“(Students are) idealistic and they want to do the right thing in the world,” Smoot said, adding that he hopes he can help empower young people with the means to achieve their academic and career goals.

Smoot said he hopes a campus organization, the UC Berkeley Foundation, will match the funds he donated to the East Bay foundation so that a science training center for high school students and cosmology research might be established.

Smoot said he decided to donate the money to a charitable organization because opportunities he had in life enabled him to pursue his own career.

“Here’s my chance to do the same for the next generation,” he said.

Although Smoot has not indicated a specific purpose for the funds, they will be focused at fellowships aiming to meet the needs of graduate and postdoctoral students studying math and science, said Chris Nicholson, vice president of development for the East Bay foundation.

The foundation connects donors—individuals, families and organizations—with charitable causes in the Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

It manages and directs more than 400 funds and endowments, totaling almost $270 million.

Officials at the foundation said they were delighted with Smoot’s decision.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Nicholson said. “There’s something special about the Nobel Prize … We’re honored to work with (Professor Smoot).”

Smoot is among six members of the UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory communities who have established funds at the foundation, according to a statement from the foundation.

Smoot said he directed the funds to the community foundation because of its accessibility to the local community and the UC Berkeley campus.

“They impress me as a very good organization who is actively trying to improve the overall quality of the East Bay,” Smoot said.

For me Nobel prize is not an authority. Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939 lol. Other infamous nominees included Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini. They are a club of wired people. Obama don't do anything to deserve of that award and even him claims with that.

ps. Do you have the same problem with your Word dictionary that trays to change Obama name to Osama?

ok, here goes...he has paid up the on the US obligations to the UN, signed onto and promised by the US. this money is used for poverty and disaster relief, as well as europe, china, russia, iran to get the IAEE into iran for inspections of their nuclear plants with sanctions if needed, and these sanctions are supported by russia and china. he has increased budgets for the FDA on food inspections that had been drastically cut in the last adminstration, he has begun talks with cuba for better relations. he is concentrating more of the military on al-qeuada in eastern afghanistan, rather than putting more troops into iraq... he is being a calming influence around the world, rather than a threatening one.
the problem is perspective...people and governments in other countries see us as a country that bombs and attacks other countries...which we have done, not as a world power that helps people. obama is attempting to change that...which is why he won the nobel prize.
and all the americans that bash obama don't see that perspective that is clear to outsiders eyes.

on the FDA part...people in other countries think it is a good thing when you try and help the majority of your own people

See there ya go. I can understand if someone supports his award based on those things. Personally some of those things you listed I don't see the same way, but thats a matter of opinion.

And has anyone ever ATTEMPTED to approach Russia and say: lets stop the arms race? Both the US and Russia have over 10k nukes. So I would gather that it was the opposite. You made more nukes, so will we.

Just to take a difference stance for a change and say lets cut this out, takes a lot of courage.

Regarding Iraq and Afghanistan, he DID put more troops into both Iraq and Afghanistan. Both wars have been escalated....

All this talk about iraq and Afghanistan just shows that people have no idea who these things work, our responsibilities, and are trying to take some of the hate mongering off Bush and put it on Obama.

Troops are being reduced in Iraq. They are being moved into Afghan. obama put into plan to have troops out by 2011. That is ending the war. The troops that are in Iraq, as we speak, are trainign the Iraqi army and police and government to be self sufficient. By the time we leave, it will be a self sufficient country. And you can't do that in 6 months.

To think that we can drop and run is highly immature, and would leave the middle east in a whirlwind of chaos.

Afghanistan is an even bigger nightmare. And unlike Bush, obama is approaching it very cautiously and gathering info. He hasn't even actually approved a troop surge yet. he is still gathering information. This was a war that was embraced, not prepared for, that has disrupted a country to the very core, and let powers in that should of never been there. You have to approach that cautiously. It is in unprecendented situation.

Again, to think we should just pack up and leave and let the nightmare grow legs and run is childish, immature, and shouldn't even be participating in a political discussion.

I am not sure about the calming influence claim you made. Things certainly aren't calm in the US, UK, Israel, Iran, Eastern Europe, etc... So where has he calmed things? The only thing I can think of to support this is some leaders who feel more comfortable with Obama.

Thanks for the reply Jimmy. I appreciate it.

What you think he should go around and touch people's chakras and make them feel better?

There is always going to be strife and war. Even JC couldn't take care of that.

But to actually get Russia to rethink about policies is incredible, considering all this history.

He recently actually got Iran to get nuclear talks again.

As soon as Obama got into office, he signed the Navajo their water rights. October 1, 2009, the construction was authorized to begin the large pipeline to bring the 80,000 navajo their water. That they have been denied for decades.

As for Guantanamo, the orders Obama signed is that it had to be closed in a year.

there is still time. Stop acting like members of the microwave society.
Especially when there is rampant nimby and they are having a hard time placing the detainees, which is just plain silly.

But there have been no new detainees brought to Guantanamo.

Obama has actually gotten Palestine and Israel leaders to sit and talk about negotiations.

If he actually brings peace to Palestine and Israel, that would be worthy of ten noble prizes.

Will the President's supporters, all 3 or 4 of you, who are congratulating him please explain why he deserves a Peace Prize. I read Obama himself said he didn't deserve it.

That he admits he doesn't deserve it is the most honest thing I've heard him say.

Because I believe the world needs more Obama like leaders, and the NPP is meant to encourage movements.

That's why.

WHAT THE HECK.

let me quote the headlines from drudge.

"OBAMA: 'SURPRISED AND DEEPLY HUMBLED'...
WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE...
MIXED REVIEWS; 'EMBARRASSING JOKE'...
PAPER: This makes mockery of peace prize...
White House Aide: 'It's Not April 1st, Is It?'...
Carter: 'Bold statement'...
Lech Walesa: 'Too early. He has no contribution so far'...
Oslo 'political endorsement'..."

While I am as flabbergasted as everyone else by this award what you need to realize is that Obama could be anointed by Christ Jesus himself in front of the entire nation and the hard right would find a way to criticize him for it and claim it was a fraud.

Their opposition to him is not based on reason or logic or really even on policy...its visceral almost psychotic in nature and to be fair to them (at least some of them and hopefully a majority) not based on race but simply because their side lost...that a liberal Democrat is in office.

As for the Nobel prize it makes no sense to me either...other than his address to the Muslim world I cannot think of anything world shaking that he has done yet to deserve it...I mean the Israeli's are thumbing their noses at him...Iraq is still a mess and no one has won in Afghanistan since Tamerlane.

See, I am sure there are people who are looking to like Obama, but then there is this business of the Nobel prize where submissions deadline was less than 1 month into his presidency, when he did not yet deliver his speech to the muslim world.

So how can such people justify liking the President when the latest attempt to raise his profile in the public's eye is clearly based on identifiable manipulation, on corruption, on falsehood.

Okay. Before you would be fooled by this Nobel Peace Prize, here is some proof why it is not possible that he won clean. If everything would be clean, he would never had a chance to win at all, just in the next year.
