There's nothing unreasonable about asking for an identification card, or social security number- something any citizen has. This is also after they have been stopped for a traffic violation.

Basically the only way you can have the Sheriff search for illegal aliens is if you have him racially profile people. Pick them up in large groups then what apologize to the legal citizens after they have already been detained? So what did the legal people do that required an arrest? What basis were they arrested? On suspicion of being illegal? Well as it turns out they weren't, so why on earth were they picked up in the first place? The police obviously had no reason other than race to suspect them.

Again the only non discriminatory way to curb the problem of illegals is to cut off the job supply to them. Use E Verify on all employees. The legal citizens won't mind because it doesn't bar them from a job, the illegals won't have a job to complain about.

No,you go to areas they are known to congregate. In my area, 7-11s in the mornings. It is a good bet the men drinking 40s out of paper bags waiting to get picked up as day-laborors are illegals.

Let's see, loitering, open container. That makes a case to look at the ID. But what about people that aren't doing anything illegal? They might be illegal aliens, however if they aren't committing any further crime, how do you suppose that INS tracks and deports these people?

I agree that they should be deported. The question is how do you get rid of the illegals without stomping all over the rights of people that are here legally? I don't want my rights stepped on in the search for those in this country illegally.

It is sad that funding for E Verify lost funding. Perhaps they can move the money they were spending on Acorn and fund this program. It's a good way to make sure that employers don't hire people that are here illegally. Furthermore they should enact stricter laws against employing illegal aliens.

Don't bother with logic or reason, when it comes to Illegals, these people are beyond discussion.

It's like they've had a total brainwash.

They talk about the 10th amendment, the 2nd, etc....

What it all really boils down to is these people are pissed off.

They are pissed off for a reason.

A really simple reason, a 2 dimensional reason.

But the reason they are pissed is really ugly, so ugly, that in order to express their frustration, it requires a complete abandonment of all semblance of rational thinking. It causes a curious pathology.

It's a form of conversion hysteria their reality is unacceptable so the mind evolves on or more alternate personalities that can create a new set of rules to go by.

See, the issue here is not the status of the Illegals, it's their color and ethnicity. It's not about legalities, or the constitution, it's about opportunity. There is an orgy of opportunism here.

Every racist and xenophobe now has a point to make, and a place to do it under the guise of intellectual debate over policies, and National concerns.

In a way I'm glad this is where they are because it's better to know the face of the enemy than to wonder who they are. They do stop white people and check them for drugs. Even when you are just walking to work minding your own business. They stopped me and my cousin, but I still support Joe Arpaio. Illegal aliens bring nothing but trouble. Murder, kidnapping, identity theft, home invasions, driving without insurance, rape, child molesting. A friend's car was stolen from in front of my house. The deputies said in a laugh " Oh, it's probably in Mexico by now."

You know, now that I think about it, I have to say that the sheriff never had the authority to conduct those patrols in the first place. DHS didn't strip him of any authority; they simply enforced the law against unreasonable search and seizure (Fourth Amendment).

This thread is not about white Illegals, it's about brown and black people, it's not even about illegals really.

It's about some White Sheriff, breaking the law of the land, but remember, breaking the law for the right(white) reason is OK. We get it, White people are not really illegal right, it's a White country.

Here in NY we have a lot of White people that are remiss in filing papers and other formalities, but most speak English, at least the Irish ones, the Italians? well they're sort of White right so they're OK for the most part, as long an they're not Mafiosi. The Canadians you already exonerated us. The Russians, they're trickier, you don't really know they're Russians until they speak, but they're mostly White so again, moot point.

Immigration laws are clearly the responsibility of FEDERAL officials, not self-aggrandizing county officals (who, if they were half as good at their jobs as they like to think, would be spending their constituents' money on preventing local crimes, not on being "america's sheriff" [and who might not have to face recall elections if they would follow that advice].) Let's not forget that the people of Maricopa County are paying Sheriff Arpaio to keep them as safe as possible. So unless being an illegal immigrant who has committed no other crimes is the single biggest indicator of a person's likelihood to hurt a resident of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio is not doing his job as well as he could, period.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a sheriff who was as zealous about tracking sex offenders and repeat drunk drivers as Joe Arpaio is about tracking immigrants?

And, on a slight tangent, wouldn't it be nice to have a sheriff who doesn't kill people before they've even stood trial?

Actually the power to enforce immigration laws does fall within the State's area of responsibility in different forms depending on what the arrangement is with ICE / DHS. Usually that power is to arrest illegal aliens and turn them over to the feds for deportation, most often being limited to checking for immigration status at the jail when a non-citizen commits a crime.

The county in Arizona had a more expanded arrangement with ICE / DHS where the Sheriff was given specific dispensation to handle enforcement which includes finding, detaining and deporting the illegals or handing them over to ICE for deportation if the country of origin was not Mexico.

It's this agreement that the feds are now wanting to revert back to inmate status checks only. Under the constitution any state can choose to take over immigration enforcement under the State's powers area of the 10th amendment.

We're seeing a pattern however where DHS claims it does not have the manpower and resources to commit ICE to immigration enforcement, choosing instead to direct those resources towards drug enforcement. Every time border states decide to step up and assign resources to the issue, (deputies for illegal alien detection and detainment, nation guard troops for border patrol, etc) the feds throw and fit and try to muscle the state into backing off.

It would seem the problem is not one of resources so much as one of an unofficial policy by the feds of allowing the borders to remain open and the illegal aliens to remain in the country. Combined with federal mandates which require banks, hospitals, schools and property owners to service the illegals (without any funds from the feds) there is no reasonable conclusion other than that the federal government wants the issue to not only continue, but to grow worse.

Every resident of this country, legal or not should be concerned about that fact.

The left takes up the banner of racial tolerance only to wave it around like a cheap flag on each and every issue. Liberals make the mistaken assumption that everyone feels the "white guilt" when nothing could be further from the truth. It's pathetic and disgusting watching people use something so serious as just another distraction.

By continuing to engage in that tactic all they do is dilute the real issue. Its a lot like crying "wolf". Stick that label of "racism" on each and every issue and then sit back and wonder why people don't seem to care anymore when it really does apply.

I hate to make assumptions based on writing alone but I can't help but notice you seem to have a one dimensional definition of racism. You base your application of it in this instance on the most shallow aspect of it - the intense dislike of someone based on the color of their skin, ethnicity or origin.

The true evil of racism is when a society applies special rules, laws, opportunities and freedoms to a group based solely on race. Do you really think the African Americans who risked their lives in the civil right movement were doing so to combat people's dislike of them?

They fought because this country would send a black man to prison for 20 years for stealing a loaf of bread while no white man suffered the same sentence.

They fought because their children were not afforded the same quality of education or because they could not buy a house where they wanted regardless of finances, eat in the same restaurant, use the same bathrooms or even drink from the same fountain as white people.

This country finally elects a black President and that achievement is followed by accusing any question of his performance, honesty, etc as racism.

A great deal of racism was based on tradition and the cultural teaching of inferiority, corruption and other baseless beliefs. There were no plausible reasons for it other than that and it was those beliefs which created that "dislike". Wrap all that in a sense of "entitlement" and you begin to get an idea of the true complexity of racism.

Like it or not there are plausible reasons for people to call for enforcement of our immigration laws. That fact alone means the motive of racism cannot be assigned as the primary and these other issues dismissed.

Here's some examples of true racism:

A system in which felons - violent criminals, drug dealers, etc are set free based on nationality.

People who feel they are "entitled" to break the law and steal from others because they are not of the same ethnicity.

A government which has one set of rules for one group and another set of rules for the other.

Do I really need to explain each of those in detail to point out why it's the illegal aliens and the federal government who engage in racism?

Someone please explain how Hispanic is a race? If I moved to Mexico or Peurto Rico would my children or grandchildren eventually be hispanic? What about people of German descent in Argentina? How about Domincans who are mostly of African American lineage?

Spain is as European as England or France, why the racial distinction? In the U.S. they have minority preferences based on their Hispanic race. Why are hispanics not given that benefit based on if they have Native American or African blood instead of it being cultural.
