I believe (not totally sure) that the reason why Westerners wear black at a burial is an attempt to fool the spirit of the recently departed from
returning home with family members.
Interestingly enough, there's some ex-marine in one of the Carolina's who was hit by lightening while talking on the telephone. He described his
out-of-body experience and basically said that when the paramedics came, they figured he was dead and put him into the ambulance. The guy's
"spirit" figured it had no better place to go, so it got into the ambulance too.
One other queer thing, I work with a woman who once worked with the coroner. She said that a policman would always open a door or window at the scene
of a death in order to let the spirit "leave."
And if you've ever seen the Warrens (husband and wife team) you'd know enough not to provoke the dead.
The religion of "Science" would have us believe there's no such thing as spirits - yeah, that and the world is flat.
