Britain, France and the United States set the stage for a dramatic confrontation with Iran as they revealed the existence of a secret nuclear site inside a mountain near the holy city of Qom as evidence of Tehran’s efforts to deceive the international community.
The coup de théâtre came at the opening of the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh after three days of intense diplomatic dealings at the UN General Assembly. President Obama, President Sarkozy and Gordon Brown took turns to demand that Iran disclose its nuclear ambitions and threaten new sanctions.
Britain was said to have played a leading role in the operation to expose the secret uranium enrichment plant, which officials say could only be used for military purposes.
Mr Brown said: “The level of deception by the Iranian Government, and the scale of what we believe is the breach of international commitments, will shock and anger the whole international community and it will harden our resolve. The international community has no choice today but to draw a line in the sand.”
