Helen Keller, the American author, political activist and lecturer, whom I don’t have to explain much about, and her instructor and lifelong companion, Anne Sullivan, appears in a Vitaphone newsreel from 1930. In this footage Sullivan shows the way how Helen Keller learned to talk. The final line of this footage, “I Am Not DUMB now!” is somewhat touching.

Here Anne Sullivan, Keller's longtime teacher and companion, explains the way she taught Helen Keller to "hear" and speak human language. After many years, this accomplishment is still amazing.

Very touching! Thanks for posting. It still amazes me she was able to learn to speak. I know that when certain senses are nonexistent, others grow stronger to replace them, but this is amazing.

Thank you for posting that. It's fascinating. I've always been amazed that Helen Keller learned to communicate so well. I had never seen this video!
