WASHINGTON (AFP) – Public trust in the US media is eroding and increasing numbers of Americans believe news coverage is inaccurate and biased, according to a study released on Monday.
Just 29 percent of the 1,506 adults surveyed by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press between July 22-26 said news organizations generally get the facts straight.
Sixty-three percent said news stories are often inaccurate, up from 34 percent in a 1985 study, Pew said.
Sixty percent of those polled said the press is biased, up from 45 percent in 1985. Just 26 percent in the latest survey said that news organizations are careful their reporting is not politically biased.

news.yahoo.com...

Looks like the majority of Americans have realized that the media is horrible. It's unfortunate that most don't realize who owns the media companies and that they are all corporate owned....and they wonder why it's biased or misleading.....

At least people are seeing through the BS....unfortunately many of those who are critical will still side with FOX, MSNBC, or CNN and hammer the other networks because it doesn't fit their own opinions.

S & F

This now brings up who are we to listen to for our unbiased news?
I mean it has gotten so bad that now even if we go outside the US even in some other countries say the UK even their venerable BBC will be slammed as following an "Agenda" so who does this leave us then?

Al Jazeera

Pravda etc?

I say they are all biased towards one aim or another. I read and watch as many different sources and hopefully try to see through theirs and find an answer which usually somewhere in the middle.

American media, nearly ALL American media is controlled by a small handful of Mega-Corporations. Monopoly, supposed to be a bad thing when it comes to a select few controlling ALL of the "news" fed to the populace.

In addition, The network NEWS has morphed into "Newsertainment".

News is no longer enough, a summary of the details of an event aren't enough, it also must be entertaining, make the news-casters, commentators, allow their ideology and opinion s become a part of the discourse.

It's just not enough to tell us what has happened, now they have to tell us what happened, what it means, what could be the result, and who disagrees with what happened, and why....

"Newsertainment"

Not even to mention that now, with the 24 hour news cycle, not only are current events described, but every statement, angle and possible associations are dissected, into the tiniest, thinest possible pieces, and then each network and each personality must run it and re-run it until something else happens, where the ugly circle must repeat.

"Newsertainment"

Oh, and now, each and every former employee of the government, or government agency, ios now a "Strategist", or "consultant", and depending on their personality, they are allowed to comment on every thing spoken of, because it must now be drug out until it's so damn thin, it no longer means anything.

It sucks................ Newsertainment.

I don't know who to listen to...which is kinda why I listen to them all....I think that's how many have seen that there is something wrong. We get bits and pieces of the truth from all angles and have to form our own opinions on what the truth is....and then we have to argue with those who buy into all of the nonsense.

I just wish people would realize every single personality in the news media is pretty much a millionare...with lots of interests in the stock market and OTHER corporations. Many of them are connected...even to those who seem to not be.

And yes people...Beck is CORPORATE OWNED. He may rail against certain corporations...GE mainly.....but he will say nothing about the huge corporate stranglehold that Roger Murdoch has on a large portion of ALL media. He never talks about HALLIBURTON...nor does he ever talk against NAFTA. He never speaks against the war...he is pro PATRIOT ACT which any person who is for the Constitution should be opposed to. Nor does he ever talk about our debt being where it is because of IRAQ.

Beck is a multi millionare....Hannity is worth 200 million...Limbaugh is worth 400 million. Do people honestly believe that they hold your interests at heart in their opinions? Beck will pass Hannity soon in worth btw. Who is cutting the checks?

It stinks really....when you watch tv and you want to believe that you are getting the truth...but your better judgement tells you that you are not.

"You can't handle the truth!"

Who knows...maybe we can't......

Andthis is where Alex Jones begins....
It seems as if they know the media is failing....
But thats why so much disinfo is circulating on the internet then...
Makes you wonder if TV's will even be a standard media in the next 10 years of if computers will overtake that, and the internet over the newsstations....

Personally Youtube has taught me more than any MSM could, also I've probably been lied to just as much through it though

Yup - I"ve said it before and I say it again. The MSM doesn't even try to hide it anymore most of the time. Some of them basically use their bias as a "selling point".

As for where to get news now - I find myself getting a surprising amount of my news here off ATS these days. Oh sure, there are posters here that cover every bias, and there are also some really unbiased posters as well.

The thing about it is - much of the time most angles end up getting covered here on ATS. A person can read, sort through all the info provided and find real bits of news.

How can anyone day we can not trust or believe the mainstream media?
Look at all the reports they have put out in the past few weeks alone about things such as the Van Jones scandal, Acorn scandals and such. Look at the in depth coverage of a protest from last week where they called protesters tea bagers instead of tea party members. Look at all their anchors who call anyone who disagree with them racists.
How could you not trust them?

The saddest sign of the times we are in, when Americans are getting their news and information from Fox news, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC and CBS.

All biased crap where truth and facts depends entirely on your political perspective.

I pray for the day when a large enough number or percentage of Americans develop the ability to think for themselves, to use the tools available to seek out unbiased news and information, to draw their own conclusions and opinions outside of biased left and right mass media.

Then, and only then will we have an opportunity for real change.

More people are trusting FOX News because if it wasn't for them who would have known about Communist Van Jones, ACORN trying to promote the underage sex trade, or the growing discontent with Mr. Obama and his trying to take over health care.

If it wasn't for FOX News, the drive-by media could report unanimous support for Mr. Obama and nobody would even question them.

Thank God for FOX News, Rush Limbaugh, ATS, and all other outlets that aren't toeing the drive-by media line!

This is great news. The media is one of the most effective tools to program the mind of the citizen. It's wonderful people are starting to realize how biased and inaccurate it really is.

I like to take in the conservative MSM, the liberal MSM, then a variety of alternative news sources and even blogs. Then weigh and compare them against each other to get to the truth.

And I never, ever listen to pundits. All they give is loud mouthed opinions from both sides. Who needs someone else's opinion? I'd rather be presented with the facts and form my own.

You have advanced beyond the human animal, congratulations! If we could only get a majority of the human race to do the same as you, then there may be hope for us after all.

Which is why I had to laugh when Rupert Murdoch recently announced his intention to charge for news content online...

THAT would require there to be actual news content.
