Agreed, but it is my humble opinion that when certain stories are very simular that it's most likely because they share the same origin. Especially when you take into account the other parts that the various cultures diverge. By no means am I saying that all stories from different cultures should be alien to each other but when the simularities out number the differences I am inclined to wonder.
And as to how long civilization has existed is contested in some quarters. I am not advocating either side though.
