Just an FYI, the Original Poster hasn't been on since 2015.

Respectfully, I think the large lapse in participation in this (and many other) threads is a reflection of the lack of dialogue on the subject in common conversation and media (and maybe even a bit of suppressive characterization, on their part in the interim.) If the common news were reporting this, people would want to explore and comment on it.

Sadly, it means that very valid and relevant matters seem "unimportant" if we measure by thread participation. Of course, there are quite a number of reasons outside that why threads become either inactive or shunned... but that's an entirely separate matter.

I'd be more than happy to discuss the Original Post, I like finance and have a pretty good insider stance on the matter.

I always wondered if there might not be a way to "revisit" old threads without disrespecting the first person's OP.

You know, kind of revamping a discussion of value, without arbitrarily invalidating elements of the original discussion (no matter how I personally might want to characterize it. I really don't know if it can be done without someone being offended, or the original thread creator feeling 'disregarded' or 'usurped.'

But maybe a new more contemporary treatment of the subject can be begun anew in a thread of it's own. Maybe than can be done...

Part of the issue is many of the links are broken so it's hard to get full context on the data. But I think, eight years later, we can see some of the points raised are still very much relevant.

Given the number of calamitous situations that citizen apathy has allowed to fester while they shouted vapid political slogans, the only catch all strategy for the mid-range future is to stay on the correct side of the grass. The methodologies beyond that will be as varied as the people doing them. The good news is you made it this far.

If you're counting on something that isn't within your means to control then you should probably be planning contingencies for when that service is interrupted. While people that have comfortable lives with lots of money may be insulted from the worst, regular people don't have the luxury to believe that math will suddenly change in their favor. When they settle the record amounts of over leveraged fiat and the dollar is a shadow of itself it will be the regular people taking the bullet.
