An account about satellites from earlier this year stated that due to age, many would begin failing this fall and into the foreseeable future.

The article I saw said those used for GPS were in need of back-ups.

It went on to say that for those using, say, Tom Tom, you may notice that 300 foot or even 700 foot increments of navigation may not be available.

I do not know what else this particular sat has been or could be used for. Only that NASA appears to be shutting down. With only 7 more launches of the shuttle left, and no money to search for asteroids, it looks like some other country(ies) will be having to take up the slack.

Landsat 5 Article

I read something about this several weeks ago and thought if there was a problem why don't they fix it, maybe they have a different system in the works, especially when you think, with this current system, everyone can use it anywhere, even the enemy.

But I have noticed that my Tom Tom 1 is taking longer to pick up the satellites, I really do need to update the software, to many times it shows me driving through fields when I drive along new roads, and with John Cleese screaming at me to turn around it becomes distracting.

Hope that fixed the link for you.
