This morning, developer Joey Hess publicly examined a portion of webOS code that reports information back to Palm in order to determine exactly what info the manufacturer is retrieving behind the scenes. What he uncovered, loosely put, is pretty uncool. Pre handsets report at least the following info back to Palm daily:

* Your location
* Which apps you’ve used and for how long
* Your app crash logs
* Which apps you have installed

First it was Apple's iPhone with a backdoor that allowed GPS tracking, remote access of microphone, etc...now Palm is taking it's turn in daily monitoring. Although the collected data will be initially used for "demographic" statistics, it only takes a Gov't subpoena to see where you've been. For criminal investigative purposes, why wouldn't you ask for a listing of GPS coordinates if you knew a suspect owned a Pre?
