2 Obama officials: No guarantee taxes won't go up

www.google.com

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's treasury secretary on Sunday said he cannot rule out higher taxes to help tame an exploding budget deficit and his chief economic adviser would not dismiss raising them on middle-class Americans as part of a health care overhaul.

As the White House sought to balance campaign rhetoric with governing, officials appeared willing to extend unemployment benefits. With former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan saying he is "pretty sure we've already seen the bottom" of the recession, Obama aides sought to defend the economic stimulus and calm a jit

Well, looks like another promise Obama is going to go back on...of course no one who isn't naive believed his "promises"...you have to hand it to him though, the change you believe in is more like "I'm changing my mind, from what I said on the campaign trail to what I said earlier in my career...that was pretty socialist"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's a socialist...I'm just saying that he's a socialist. Hopefully his approval rating goes through the floor down to the Bush level, when he starts showing his true beliefs on governance, and we can get this joke of a President out. To those of you who say "well he's only been on office for 6 months, give him more time!"...EXACTLY, he's only been in for 6 months and look what he's already done and outlined for his master plan. How can a president make me nostalgic for Bush?

Every President promised no new taxes, and every president raised taxes.
Every party proposes cutting taxes and yet they get raised.
It's not a surprise that at some time in this presidency that taxes get raised.

I think the point of the thread isn't to say it wasn't going to happen.

The point of the thread was to show all the people who voted for him based upon such speeches, when in the end, they just got smacked in the face.

This is one of the only things Obama has ever said that actually sounded good. Yet, he is already backing down on it. Who would have guessed!

There was a reason everyone is against this nationalized healthcare...MORE WELFARE!

A little rap.

Nationalized healthcare, what do you mean welfare!?!?!
Its human rights, trying to shed a little light,
don't you think its right?

More money for the hungry who don't care to feed themselves through labor like the rest of us...thats all it is.

Uhm...first off, not every president raised taxes...you know there used to be no such thing as in income tax...right? and even still not every President raised taxes... Also, I think you are missing the point of people being naive and Obamaniacs

Taxes for who?
Taxes haven't gone up, it's a hypothetical.
Reagan raised taxes, Bush1 raised taxes. So what?
When the Government needs money, taxes are raised, big surprise.
Instead of printing more and causing inflation, raising taxes on the higher earners makes sense.
Why all the alarm about everything Obama does, or more accuratly MIGHT do? Why are you rabid Obama haters so afraid?

Did you read the article, or do you just comment? It clearly says "on the middle class," even though he said he would not raise middle class taxes...how is that "rabid." Someone contradicting themselves is rabid? I don't think Reagan said he wouldn't raise taxes, and while he raised taxes in some areas he cut in others, as did Bush one...even Clinton. However, I don't think any of them made speeches centered around and with the exact quatations "I will not raise taxes on the middle class," and if they did then they too are hypocrites. So which of us is rabid again? The person who didn't read the article, or the person who posted an article on an Obama contradiction reported by a credible news source at the AP...and based off of quotations from his two top economic advisers.

I would like to say to everyone out their DUH!!!

Being someone who has been aware of BHO for 10+ years, I'm from Illinois, we all knew it was a matter of time.

Look at his voting record, what their is of it.

Look at what he says he believes in. (Redistribution of Wealth)

Look at how he treats those who disagree with him. (dismissive)

For anyone who has ever really listened to him the pending tax increase is no shock.

His policies are going to help bring the unemployment rate up to 15% if not higher. Just to clarify for those who don't know acceptable unemployment is between 4 - 6%.

Had we had another 4 years of a bad Republican president Unemployment would have stopped at 10% IMHO.

We should all give Obama credit.

He has screwed the American public with absolute consistency.

No one is perfect - but his record for bending us all over and rooting us good is certainly a perfect record.

I normally ask myself what else can he do to make it worse, and it's like he's a mindreader.

He finds another new way to make it worse!

So I quit speculating.

Getting too expensive.

Here is Bill Burton saying that Obama's plans were not carved in stone.

In the end, he will say he kept his promise. He didn't raise your taxes, Congress did. He had to sign the bill because it was important for America.

Obama and his cronies are really pissing me off. we can only hope come next election that everyone else has woken up and we find people in all White House and hill jobs that can actually run them without being pond scum. Course that's probably too much to ask.

Does it not make sense to tax the american super-rich who have amassed their wealth through the exploitation of the working man? It was the working man and woman that earned them their money, and yet so many live in poverty and it is unnecessary to elaborate on the suffering of workers in asia.

For all the talk of america being the land of freedom and opportunity, the powers that be and rich refuse to look after those that built it. America was founded on a set of incredibly admirable values, somewhere along the way the fat cats and corporations have twisted that, worse still from what i read hear many people here buy into what they are told. I dont know how many of you are living in housing projects, working several low paid jobs with few or no benefits, but i can guess.

Sure it is. Unfortunately, the rich have the money to pay for the best CPA. Furthermore, the rich will pass on what they can't write off to the consumer. In the end, Consumers will pay for the increase taxes the rich have to pay.

Such are the evils of an unregulated free market economy, that being said planned economies are fraught with problems of beauracracy. A middle ground has to be found, but you are right that the rich will still get away with it, one way or another unless the planet reaches a consensus on how to run things fairly.

The idea of that is quite sadly laughable though, i guess we are doomed to obscene disparities of wealth.

Please go back and study the history classes you've so obviously missed.

Without the corporations you dislike, the U.S. would be an agrarian society and no doubt part of someone else's empire by now.

Oh gosh, not the c-word. Dont criticize my knowledge of history if you can't identify the differences between socialism and communism, i'm not pursuing a revolutionary communist agenda.

And i apologize if my knowledge of american history is'nt paticularly deep, im 16 and british so what i do know i have had to teach myself. For all your 'freedom' you are part of an empire, ruled by multinationals and to an extent, the japanese. Why would a slower industrialization of the states have been inherently bad? It sure would have made your neighbors happy.

Really?

The only thing missing from your posts was use of the "p-word" - proletariat ...

You assume too much.
The rich invest their $$$ which in turn keeps the economy going.
They earn it .. they have a right to keep it. Otherwise it's slavery to the state.

You have no right to LEACH off those who are successful.

The 'rich' are considered by Obama to be those making what should be
considered 'middle class' in many places. If you make $150,000 in NYC you are not Mr. Moneybucks and yet folks like that will get screwed by Obama in order to 'redistribute the wealth' to those who are unproductive.

It's just plain wrong.
