Ahahaha! That link reminds me. Last year they keep telling the media that recovery would come. Japan would recover by June 2009, so would the rest of the world, then it became first quarter of 2010, then 2nd, etc. blah blah blah...then it's 2011, then 2012...

Please don't tell me you believe that crap?

I think it hilarious though you're willing to kill & cook a rabbit but when it comes to the easy part of actually eating it, you suddenly have moral issues ?

My wife is this way also. Even with chicken! She likes chicken, but it has to already be prepared. She can't eat it off the bone, and if she has to cook and prepare it, she won't eat it!

I understand. Sometimes you see the arteries and tendons. If she runs across something like that while she is eating, she is finished!

So, either she prepares it, or she eats it, but never both. Since she ways 98 lbs, I wind up doing the preparing, because I want her to eat!

As for paranoid, the OP is right on! Food prices have increased dramatically since gas prices went up, and they never came back down. Especially if you are buying name brand stuff. I typically buy private label, but there are some things that just aren't the same. There are some private labels that are better too!
\

Discotech, yes you get it. My mom tried to show me how to cut up a whole chicken one time (and I love chicken) I wanted to learn, OMG I asked her why in the H#ll anyone would do something so gross. She said honey we had no choice we were hungry and we did not have Kroger and its meat department where everything is cut up and neat and clean. Wow, I mutilated that chicken and got so sick doing it. So when I fixed the rabbit I told my husband that I think I ate it growing up because I never seen it prepared. My mom fixed it and put it on the table, the end. So you are right I get sick looking at raw meat with bones and if I come across a vein.. Hello, I am done... Funny I worked in a funeral home and assisted in preparing the bodies and that never made me sick but then again I wasn't preparing them to eat... People are funny we all have our quirks. Thank you so much for having the intelligence to understand. As for the off brand stuff I eat mostly off brand stuff, just a handful of name brand things I really like, but we have a Save-A-Lot and I prefer their canned goods over name brands. Their spaghetti sauce is so much better than name brand it is not even funny. YUM!

Jeffery I am sorry to hear of your loss. You are a wonderful man to try to raise your babies on your own and you have my respect, they are lucky to have a dad like you. Thank you for such a heart felt post. I am glad to see that I am not the only one seeing these things. It is real some people just do not want to face reality. Thank you again and God bless.

Melissa, please don't be scared.
I don't know where you are, but there are common sense things that you can do to prepare for hard times.
I know how you feel about having to murder you'r own meat.
Taking the flesh of another being to sustain you'r own is one of the ways mankind has thrived, but if everyone had to do thier own slaughtering there would be more vegans.
Did you know you can raise catfish in a 55 gallon drum on scraps and bargain basement dried dog food? Buy the marked down brands, especially the bags that have been torn and taped up.
You can also grow potatoes year round in 55 gallon drums(indoors for the winter months), even if you live in town, you'll need a southern exposure for you'r drums and used 5 gallon paint buckets.
You can grow tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets year round, you might have to pollinate some blossoms yourself (a lite artist's brush will suffice) but you can grow tomatoes, squash, okra, and a host of other foods.
Having the ability to feed you'r own will relieve much of you'r worry.
You can buy dried beans, pasta, legumes, wheat flour, salt, sugar, cooking oils, and other foods that will keep without refrigeration. Go to stores like the Dollar General, or Fred's, or you'r locally owned supermarket. Buy dented cans. Buy expiring "best if used by" goods, just about everything says it has a two year expiration date because of a New Jersey Law...really. Most canned goods will stay safe to eat far longer.
Arm yourself. I know it sounds radical, but if you must remain in an area where you may encounter human predators you'd be surprised how fast somebody trying to jimmy you'r door will split if you touch off a 45ACP blank cartridge, have a clip of warning shot blanks but be prepared to slap in a clip loaded with 230 grain 45ACP in FMJ, this is a large, relatively slow moving load that will deliver knock down power to even a large assailant, semi automatic handguns in this caliber can be had in a wide variety of price ranges, see you'r local pawn broker.
Remember, self defense is you'r right, the defense of you'r home and family, you'r obligation.
But don't let fear dictate you'r actions.
You see hard times coming.
Think, prepare, survive.
If you are in the city, but have no job, and are having trouble keeping ahead, think about relocating to a rural area, perhaps you have family who are still down on the farm, they may have room for you'r family, or you may find a home to rent nearby, you'll have a larger support base with family in the area.
Should wide-spread rioting and such occur, you'll never see rioters in the country.
Why?
Because everybody is armed.
Good Luck!
And
NO FEAR!

There are more and more self help books available at the bookstores on the topic of the economic pandemonium that is around the corner. Some are really good, full of no nonsense approach to the tough times ahead. I bought one and would recommend it to anyone interested in surviving the ultimate chaos of 2010.

Do not let the current economy get you down.

Strive to live, do not live to strive.

Strive to survive, do not survive to strive.

Strive to get past it all, and you can survive.

I have lost my electricity, due to non-payment.

I am in the process of losing my apartment, due to non-payment.

No one in my area is hiring, and I am used to working 2, 3, and 4 jobs simultaneously.

I burned through my entire life savings of $17,000 in this last year, just to stay afloat.

I will make it however. I am just not giving up.

Melissa, do not give up, ATS'ers need to stick together.

I work at a homeless shelter for runaway teens and when we run out of treats like juice, cookies and Hot Pockets, they become unmanageable. You haven't seen SHTF until you've tried to convince a bunch of thirsty teens that TAP WATER is better for you than Kool Aid and we weren't planning on ordering any more.

To keep the peace and restore order, we capitulated and resumed buying the kids treats. Mainly to avoid having the kids administer a beat-down to the counselors. I can't tell you how many times I've had to break up a fight because one of the kids ate the last Hot Pocket another one was saving for himself.

I'd hate to think what would happen if Americans couldn't afford to buy Pepsi and Oreos.

The little packets of koolaid/or store brand that you mix up yourselves are really cheap. The store brand is usually 10/15 cents a pack.

Sugar is a lot cheaper than splenda.

That is funny LOL... I could do without my soda but I prefer that my daughter drink Kool Aid and I make it with splenda which is a natural dirivative of sugar and does not have the same side effects as the other artificail sweetners. I buy kool aid bacause it is .20 a pack here and is sugar free and made with natural flavors. She does drink a lot of water too. I buy it in bottles.

Aw, buddy thank you! I am so sorry about your losses. My goodness you have been hit hard. That is what I am talking about. Nest year many more people maybe even me and my family will start to loose our home after we blow through our savings if the job market does not pick up. When you back a human into a corner they tend to revert to animalistic ways to get out. In the paper today a young girl that was pregnant was arrested for stealing food at the grocery store. I am mad at the grocery for not helping her. No she should not steal but my God if I was pregnant and hungry I suppose I might steal too. How sad. This is a prime example of my fear, people who normally would not do anything wrong suddenly find themselves doing it to survive, like stealing. So sad. Hang in their too SpartanKing, we will survive.

No it's not. Splenda is a derivative of chlorine. It's idiotic to consume it. Sugar is better as you'll need all those calories when SHTF.

54 bucks?! Where in the world are you shopping?

As much as people hate Wal-Mart, here is a hint: swallow your pride, and think about yourself and your family. I can't fathom how that list of groceries could cost anyone 54 bucks. You are talking 5 bucks per ITEM on that list. You should have paid probably 30 bucks tops, for that amount of groceries (probably less if you shop around).

I've seen a slight rise in groceries, but it's not been that tremendous. It's held pretty steady the last couple of years, really.

You can shot for a LOT less if you shop around, catch the sales, etc. Hamburger not on sale? Chicken at buy 1, get one free? Change your menu and have chicken this week. For crying out loud.. if you are paying that much, you've only yourself to blame.

I'm in Denver, and I did check out the paper last week for jobs, you can't be too cafeful. But for my field (computer networking etc), there were a rather lot of jobs. So it's maybe not as bad as folks act.

Oh.. and one more hint. Do NOT buy your cleaning supplies at the grocery store. You can get them for 1 buck each at most dollar stores now. Large cans of comet cleanser for 1 buck? Bottles of slightly less amazing, but still very effective laundry soap for a buck? Yes please!

Yeah, and they also can cause pretty major depression too. I used to drink diet pop quite a lot, as well as using artificial sweeteners in my food, and I got very depressed and run down after a while.

Of course, not all of my depression was due to the diet, but when I cut artificial sweeteners from my diet my mood began to increase slowly but steadily.

I've read that artificial sweeteners are carcinogenic (cancer causing) as well.

No human should ever be denied food in this day and age!

I have a serious personal issue with beggars and vagrants, but if they ask me for food, I never say no. I won't give them money, but I ALWAYS offer to buy them something to eat. Most of the time, they turn down that offer and try to get cash anyway!

Everyone in that store should have ponied up and bought her some groceries. The store itself should have donated some food. The cops should have even helped out.

WE HAVE TO LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER THESE DAYS!

This reminds me of when I was pregnant with my daughter, although I was not caught. I was homeless and pregnant and ended up having to move back in with my abusive husband because I was too ill to hold down a job between the morning sickness and recovering from the injuries he afflicted upon me. People in the town refused to help me because he was a government employee and people liked him.

Does the newspaper have an online version of the article?

Melissa, I really do feel for you. I can certainly understand your sentiments about having to kill and cook the rabbits. Animals are beautiful creatures as I have come to find that are all lives great and small. The media and society have divorced us from the simple fact that life feeds on life. Believe it or not the grass screams when the rabbit eats it - the grass wants to live too. All creatures on this earth feed without questioning the source or morality of what they do; that is a problem unique to our species and particulary among females in the US.
Perhaps your problem is that you have not given proper respect to the lives that have been taken to feed you everyday for your entire existence. We chew and swallow without thinking of what went into that bite we just ate. In order to live something else must die. That is the way of life for all creatures. There is no other way.
It may take some effort but every time you eat try this: Give thanks to your creator (or the earth) for the life that was given that YOU may continue to live. It is the most sacred act we partake in yet so few of us ever give gratitude to that source for our existence.
REJOICE! that life was a GIFT to you that YOU may live. Practice that and you will also find that your own life is richer and fuller for you now have a sacred responsibility to use your life for something special. What that purpose is for you to discover.
Remember you are unique, unique as are the billions of other unique people who are here and have come before you. The differences that are our beauty we have learned to curse in our desire to be like others. There is only one of you! Just one was ever made like you and there will never be another. For all of us that is our sole claim to divinity.
Yes, it was a beautiful life that was given that you may continue and remember that that beauty is now a part of you. You are the rabbit and the rabbit is you. All life is but one life expressed in a million different ways. Eat, give thanks and know that all is as it should be and that you are a part of the great circle of life.
Live well and may peace be your companion always.

regards, Asktheanimals
