Will machine intelligence become the dominant species ?

I imagine a scenario where a video game maker loses control of their network while the AI of their cartoon character quickly exceeds the greatest human minds then takes over the world with machines and advanced holographic technologies. Next thing you know we have 16 foot tall virtual marios terrorizing the world and smashing people exactly like they do to the goombas on the video game. The huge screens in New York that usually feature talk show adverts will be removed and you'll see evil mario affirming his supremacy with awesome jumping action. That would be a horrible way to go.

To take that scenario one further, once the virtual marios have conquered humanity and we've become extinct they begin their conquest of space. At the end of a few millennia the great horror of the milky way will be the dominance of mario and all intelligent races and species across this galaxy will have known the wrath that one single video game character can bring when souped up on AI.
